The coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed our daily
lives in numerous ways in more than a year now. The
Department of Education (DepEd) adopted physical distancing
measures considering the continuous spreading disease on
COVID-19 that is why schools not only in the country had to
close in response to the pandemic. This moves to the transition
from traditional face-to-face instruction to remote teaching.
The DepEd introduced alternative learning delivery
modalities termed distance teaching that utilize modern
technology where learning takes place between the teacher and
the learner who are geographically remote from each other
during instruction. This answers the needs for continuous
education wherein learners must gain mastery on the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELCS) stipulated in the
curriculum.
Different schools all over the Philippines have
showcased various preparations to guide teachers, parents, and
learners in the conduct the new normal in education. As
teachers, using the available resources is utilized for delivering
distance learning during periods of class suspension and even
similar circumstances to meet the necessary skills.
Homeschooling is on the rise due to the existing
situation and still many K-12 learners are struggling to make
academic progress and suffered learning loss. The full
academic and non-academic impacts of school disruptions due
to COVID-19 remain to be seen.
Utilizing technology for home learning is a boundless
support to the alternative delivery of education that will fit also
in our current situation. This also showed the methods and
light with the framework for possible extension of home
learning in the next academic year. During those times before
the pandemic, home and school education affect each other to
the total development of the leaner. Home education and
follow up studies is important to poster success learnings
among our learners. We usually seek the help of parents to
support and guide their child once they are at home. This will
close the gaps between home and school. But in today’s
situation, home schooling is the only option for the learners as
they are not allowed to come to school. Home schooling is hip
to attain such goals in continuous learning of our learners
during the temporary closure of the schools.
With the efforts and hardwork of the teachers in K-12
curriculum adjustments; alignment of learning materials;
various modalities of delivery; and corresponding teacher and
parent/guardian training for homeschooling. as required in the
Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (LCP). These
modifications on certain policies and practices were necessary
steps in adapting to the “new normal” while remaining true to
the context of education futures. We are all aware on the issue
of accessibility as the utmost concern and the DepEd had
devised various modalities to ensure that online learning is only
one of the options among all others in this new learning
environment in home schooling. Teachers in the field units will
determine the most appropriate combinations or strategies for
every locality as the DepEd look into addressing equity
concerns of the constituents in this new arrangement.
