put it on her wrist and let the trader admire her. However, not impressed by his encouraging
nods, she gave it back and asked for another piece found at the back of the stall. But the
moment the trader turned to reach for the piece she had singled out, the woman quickly
slipped another bracelet in the pocket of the jacket she was wearing.
Mama Ramotswe gasped. She felt she could not sit back and allow a crime to be
committed in front of her very eyes. So, she stood up and began to walk firmly towards the
stall where the customer was engaged in a serious conversation about the merits of the
merchandise he had brought to her.
“Excuse me, Mama!”
The voice came from behind her and when she turned, she saw it belonged to the
waitress, a young woman Mama had not seen at the café before.
The waitress pointed an accusing finger at her:”You cannot run away like that. I saw you.
You cannot leave without paying the bill.”
For a moment, Mama was unable to speak. The accusation was such a terrible one,
and so unwarranted. Of course she had not tried to run away without paying the bill. She
would never do such a thing. All she was doing was trying to stop a crime being committed
in front of her eyes.
