1. GEMX – GENERAL PRESENTATION
1.1 MAIN FEATURES
GemX is a new concept of X-ray generator dedicated to cover a wide
range of portable industrial and security applications. It has been
developed with the most performing technologies currently available,
focusing on performances and reliability. Moreover it is customisable
according to the end-user requirements and offer a full range of options.

Specifications Comments
GemX can be supplied with different types of X-ray inserts. The GemX-160 « Be-
Beryllium window » doesn't filter low energy photons, which opens the door to inspection of low
(20 – 160 kV) density materials in applications such as soft tissues study, the analysis of artistic
paintings and composite material control. It can check structures ranging from : 300 um
Glass/Al window of carbon fibre up to 30 mm of steel. With a GemX-160 « glass window », only photons of
(50 – 160 kV) energy higher than 60 keV are useful. It is the best choice for applications dedicated to
the analysis of metal structures.
Glass/Al window Otherwise, GemX-200 can penetrate up to 35mm of steel in NDT. Perfect for welding and
(50 – 200 kV) pipes inspections. It can also reach 45mm of steel penetration in security...
20/50 – 200 kV The parameters of the GemX have been selected to provide the best compromise between
0.1 – 2 mA size and performances. They fit at best the requirements of new digital detectors that
1 – 60 s require less X-ray dose than traditional film techniques.
Focal spot distance Focal spot on G160 is 54 mm from external front panel surface.
Focal spot on G200 is 80 mm from external xray windows surface.
Oil is the only electrical insulating material that efficiently evacuates heat. Its use in X-ray
Oil insulated generators protects the tubes from thermal stress and the glass from puncturing. Tube
1:5 thermal duty cycle lifetime is therefore increased drastically. More, the system can be used at a rhythm as
high a 1:4, i.e. at 2 hours of X-ray per 8 hour.

100 kHz switching bipolar generator, the voltage ripple is exactly 0 V.
variable duty cycle Additionally, the power electronic design takes into account the state of the art in the
Resonant modes technology (high frequency, resonant inverters and transformers, ... ).
In function of the application and of the customer requirements, GemX can be controlled

« secured protocol » warranties safety.
GemX can be supplied externally 2 different ways :
28-35 Vdc
- from 28V to 35V with its DC entry ;
Universal Power
- with a universal power supply (110 – 240 Vac) ;
In his fully autonomous version, GemX can be powered with internal batteries. Lithium
Li Po Battery Polymer is the latest technology, with the best weight/capacitance ratio, used e.g. in
electrical cars or recent laptops. With these, GemX batteries have an autonomy of 300,000
kV.mA.s. (It can generate X-ray at 100 kV – 1 mA during 3000 s, i.e. 50 minutes !)
In order to improve autonomy, the electronic automatically adjusts to the most efficient
Power Control working points. If voltage drops too low, it will decrease the selected mA to keep kV
constant as long as possible
GemX has been designed to be robust and withstand to the hard working conditions of
Robust industrial and military devices.
Its is reinforced and main components are protected from shocks

1.2 SET-UP AND DEPLOYMENT

Thanks to its smart double-handle, GemX is an

all-terrain device : easy to carry and deploy.
It can generate X-rays in all directions. Its
standard position (20 cm above the ground) is
the best compromise for EOD.

1.6 CABLES AND CONFIGURATIONS
GemX can be used in different configurations and with different devices. According to the
configuration, different cables must be used to connect devices.

GemX can worked in wireless mode or a cable can be A wireless warning device (beacon ; flashing light)

controller. In the wired mode, use a DB15-DB15 black remote controller and the generator.
cable (10 m long)

The warning device ( beacon ; flashing light) can be cabled to the generator. In that case, you need to use the
DB15-DB15 white cable ( 5 m ). The remote controller can be connected to the warning device through a
BD15-DB15 black cable ( 10 m ) or can work in wireless mode.

To interface GemX to a PC, you need to use a USB- RIWGX (not RCWGX ; I stands for Interface) can be

an straight Ethernet cable.

10/52
1.7 FIRST SHOOT & PREHEATING

1.7.1 Unlock the generator - software key

GemX is protected by a software key in order to avoid an accidental use by people who would try
to use this without the authorisation.
When generator has been switched on, immediately push the buttons of the RCWGX or of the
control board in the following sequence :
( +) ( +) ( - ) ( - )
The software will then be unlock.
In case of mistake or if you pushed another button in the meantime, you have to switch the
generator or the RCWGX off and then on in order to make another trial.

1.7.2 Preheating

Like high voltage high frequency constant potential

generators, GemX must follow a preheating process after it
stopped working more than 8 hours and if energy is higher
than 80 kV (GemX-160) or 100 kV (GemX-200).

When a reheating is required the generator automatically

displays a REHEAT message and ask to the user the
permission to launch the reheat process.
According to the kV that were asked to the generator, the
voltage applied to the tube will increase step by step in
order to recreate the vacuum inside the glass tube.

Preheating lasts up to 2 minutes. It can be performed in

several steps to go faster (e.g. up to 140 kV and later the
day, if needed, up to 200 kV with GemX-200).

1.7.3 Seasoning
GemX must follow a seasoning process after it stopped working more than a month.
Seasoning process is manual. Operator have to follow the procedure explained above.
1. Shoot @ 80 kV (or 100 kV GemX-200) – 1 mA – 30 s
2. Rest 60 s
3. Preheat automatically up to 100 kV (120 kV GemX-200)
4. Shoot @ 100 kV (120 kV GemX-200) – 1 mA – 30 s
5. Rest 60 s
6. Shoot again
Repeat from step 3 by increasing 20 kV each time until you reach max kV (160 or 200 kV
depending on your GemX unit).

1.8 RADIO PROTECTION

1.8.1 1 mR = 10 µGy ( = 10 µSv )

The international unit to measure the biological effect of the absorbed X-ray dose is the Sievert
(Sv). Other units are used, such as the Gray (Gy) for the emitted dose. For what concerns the
GemX-160 : 1 Gy = 1 Sv and we will always use for clarity and simplicity, use the Sv in the
following text even if it is not always 100 % appropriate.
The Rad (R) or milliRad (mR) is still used in several places. 1 mR is equivalent to 10 µSv.

1.8.2 References
(*) the numbers provided here below are indicative. The purpose is to keep the main information
as clear and synthetic as possible but it is not normative or binding in any way.

12/52
1.8.3 Radio protection rules

1.8.3.1 Leakage dose

GemX complies with international regulation, particularly for what concerns leakage. That means
that if you use a full day the generator (making 2 hours of X-ray at the maximum kV and mA) and
if you stay at a distance of 10 m on the back of it, you will at maximum be exposed to 100 µSv of
radiations, i.e., five times more than what you absorb naturally per day, 3 times less than one chest
radiography, 15 times less that the total dose you absorb for a traditional radiographic exam at
hospital and 100 times less than if you pass one CT.
Assuming you perform 20 shots of 10 s at maximum power (160 kV and 1 mA), this value drops
below 3 µSv, 3 times less of what you will receive in any case due to natural radiation, 15 times less
than if you travel from New-York to Paris by plane.
If instead of staying 10 m behind the GemX, you stay 20 m behind, the dose absorbed due to 20
shots of 10 s drops below 1 µSv... 8 times less than the natural radiation during 1 day.
Danger can be evaluated with these numbers.

1.8.3.2 Direct dose

GemX-160 is limited to 160 kV - 1 mA. That means that at full power, in the direct beam, the
emitted dose (air kerma) is ~ 10 Gy /h at a distance of 1 m in front of the device. At 80 kV – 2 mA,
emitted dose (air kerma) is ~ 15 Gy /h. These values doesn’t concern the GemX-160 only. They are
the same for all X-ray generators with equivalent filtering.

GemX-200 is limited to 200 kV - 1 mA. At full power, in the direct beam, the emitted dose (air
kerma) is ~ 0.6 Gy /h at a distance of 1 m in front of the device.

IMPORTANT
1. These measurements were performed in free space without scattering radiations.
2. These values result from tests performed on a test unit at LCIE laboratory in Paris in compliance
with NFC 74-100 and on different units at Medex in compliance with ISO 13485 quality process of
Medex. Medex warranties only the compliance with International Regulations that require a dose
lower than 2 mGy/h at 1 m outside the direct beam.
( 2 mGy /h at 1 m = 2000 µGy /h at 1 m = 0.55 µGy /s at 1 m = 0.055 mR /s at 1 m = 200 mR /h
at 1 m)

15/52
1.8.3.4 Scattering
The purpose of an X-ray generator is to examine an object. When an object is irradiated with X-ray,
it is submitted to X-ray scattering. Scattering means that X-ray are re-emitted by the objects in all
directions and, particularly, back from the direction of the emission.
Let's assume that scattered X-ray dose is 1,000 times lower than the direct dose. Nevertheless that
means that 10 m on the back of the device, calculations indicate that you are exposed to a dose 36
µSv / h, which is in fact higher than the dose due to leakage radiations. For 20 shots of 10 s, that
means you can additionally be exposed to a dose of around 2 µSv.
Scattering dose cannot be determined by advance because the « 1000 times lower » rule used here
above is just a « good practice approximation ». Scattered dose depends on geometry and object
compositions and is nearly impossible to calculate.
Scattered X-rays are nevertheless usually of low energy. So, they will be absorbed by most
obstacles and it is a good way to protect you from these rays.

1.8.3.5 Distance
The most important rule in radio protection is certainly the « square distance rule ». It means that
the X-ray dose decreases with the square of the distance from the emission spot.
For example, the dose at 10 m from an X-ray source will be 10^2 = 100 times lower than the dose at
1 m from the device. As another example, the dose at 20 m from the device will be 2^2 = 4 times
lower than the dose at 10 m from the device.
When possible and if it has no practical consequence for your work, try to be as far as possible
from an X-ray source.

16/52
1.9 ACCESSORIES
1.9.1 AC/DC Power supply
GemX can be supplied by its batteries or by an external power supply. This one can be of any type
and its stability is not important. Indeed, GemX adapts itself automatically to its input DC value
in a reasonable range.
Output DC voltage must be between 28 and 35 Vdc but 33 Vdc is preferred, in particular if the
power supply cable is long. The nominal power of the power supply is 300 W for 10 A.
Medex can supplies a connection cable with the appropriate connectors.

1.9.2 Flashing light – Warning device

As an option, Medex can supply a flashing
light. This comprises :
- 3 light signals (green, yellow/orange, red)
synchronised with the ones of the
generator and the remote controller ;
- a beeper ;
- an emergency stop ;
- an additional interlock connector.
The flashing light can be wireless (see Wired and wireless warning device
picture) or connected to the generator with
a particular cable supplied by Medex. ( See
chapter 1.6 )

1.9.3 Laser Pointer

GemX-160 is supplied with a laser pointer that

can be fixed magnetically to the generator.

GemX-200 is NOT supplied with a laser pointer

because of its wide beam angle and large
aluminium window.

2.3.3 Start / ( OK )
This button has two different functions :
* In « edit mode » it is used to validate parameter changes (and go back to initial display)
* In « running mode » it is used to start X-ray exposure

For security concerns :

* emission doesn’t start if « start » button is not released after two seconds;
* « Start » button of the control panel automatically forces a 10 s pre-warning.
Don't forget to validate parameter changes with ( OK )
else it will not be taken into account.

2.3.4 Stop / ( Cancel )

This button has two different functions :
* In « edit mode » it is used to cancel any operation (and go back to initial display)
* In « running mode » it is used to stop X-ray emission.

X-ray emission automatically stops after exposure time has elapsed EXCEPT in
fluoroscopy mode which enable to make X-ray continuously.

2.3.5 ( - ) / ( + )
Both these buttons are used :
* to increase or decrease the value of a parameter,
* to select some settings
* to move along the sub menus.
For kV – uA and time settings, keeping the buttons pushed will increase the speed of selection.

Don't forget to validate any parameter change with ( OK )

else it will not be taken into account.

2.6.3.3 Reheat
In some cases, the Normal Display (See 2.4.1) is replaced by this one when the generator and the
control panel are switched on :

* k V 1 3 0 * µ A 0 8 5 0
= =

* E x 0 1 0 R e h e a t !
=

* What is reheating and why is it required ?

It is harmful for an X-ray tube to work directly at high kV if it hasn't worked at this level during
the past days. This could produce arcing inside the tube and destroy this. The reheat is a process
by which the kV applied to the X-ray tube increase step by step to prevent the danger.
This has to be done about once per week.

For your protection, don't forget to use the « radiation protection cap » that is
provided with the GemX and that reduce the direct beam dose ( See paragraphs 1.8
and 1.8.3.2 ) by a factor of 1,000,000.

* How to launch the « re-heating » process ?

Push ( OK ) - start button. The generator will manage the re-heating process by itself in function of
the former exposure parameters.
* How to avoid « re-heating » ?
If for any reason you need to skip « re-heating » process by the process explained here below the
generator will not be under warranty any more. The best solution if such event can occur is to use
the generator regularly (each 7 days) and check everything goes fine with it.

- One full kV shot per week will improve X-ray generator reliability and lifetime.
- Reheating is needed for kV upper to kV max /2 (above 80 kV for the GemX-160 or
above 100 kV for the GemX-200).
- Warranty is voided if reheating process is skipped.

* How to by-pass « re-heating » process ?

You can by-pass « re-heating » process thank to the sub-menu « NoReheat »

2.6.3.4 Seasoning
* Seasoning is not available any more.

2.6.3.5 Wireless option

* What is wireless ?
GemX can be equipped with an optional wireless transmitter and a dedicated « Wireless Remote
Controller called RCWGX ». It works in the 433 MHz band and its range is 100 m line of sight in
open air area (less inside a building).

People safety : always keep the generator and its immediate surrounding at sight
when the device emits X-ray.
Radio-frequency emitting devices are prohibited in particular environments. Don't
use the wireless controller in such environment and refer to local regulations.

* Pairing a remote controller and a generator

Any wireless Remote Controller RCWGX can be connected to any GemX generator BUT both must
be paired for obvious security issues to avoid any interference.

Pairing process is simple. You need to connect

generator and RCWGX with a pairing cable and
wait for a few seconds. Then, select a
communication channel and remove the cable.

* Channel selection
There is no risk of interference when several GemX/RCWGX pairs are used in the same area. But
communication can be faster and range higher if a different channel has been selected for each pair
of equipment. 10 channels (0 -> 9) can be used.

* k V 1 3 0 * µ A 0 8 5 0 This menu is used to select channel.

= = Push ( > ) to have access to sub-menu

* Radio frequency disturbances

Some environments can be heavily parasitized by ELM emission. These disturbances can affect the
transmission quality between GemX and RCWGX.
When the transmission is lost, the following message is displayed while the green leds of the
Remote controller flash :

* k V 1 3 0 * µ A 0 8 5 0
= =
* E x 0 1 0 N o X G e n !
=

If the disturbances last less than 2 seconds this has no effect and the communication is restored
(else, see next section – Safety : Loss of communication). You improve the situation is selecting a
channel that is less disturbed by ELM emissions.
* Safety : Loss of communication

The remote controller always tries to restore the communication with the generator. It calls this
steadily and displays the type and serial number of the generator.
On the generator side, first action is to immediately stop X-ray emission. Green led starts flashing.
If ( OK ) is pushed, RCWGX serial number paired to the GemX is displayed.

2.6.3.6 Auto OFF

* What is Auto OFF ?
When the generator is battery powered, it is very important to spare energy. In that case, generator
Auto OFF option can be enabled. The generator will automatically enter sleep mode after a period
of inactivity from 1 to 30 minutes.
The generator will automatically wake up when any message is sent to this or if any button is
pushed on.

- Wakening is NOT possible through communication in wireless mode.

- Wakening is enabled only if jumper JP12 has been set on the electronic board

2.6.3.7 Stop Condition

* What is stop condition ?
There are many reasons for which a generator can stop its emission. Some are normal and
expected (such as « exposure end »), others warn of a new condition (such as « low battery »).
Others warn a problem (such as « kV unbalance »).
At each stop, the last Stop Condition of the GemX is displayed after 5 seconds. This is also
registered in the generator and the user can check this in the « Stop Cond » sub-menu.

2.7 REMOTE CONTROLLERS RCWGX

Remote Controllers can be supplied to control

GemX remotely :

RCWGX (where W stands for Wireless) is

a wireles-type remote controller the range
of which is 100 m in open air area (less in
buildings). A cable can be used to use the
remote controller in wire mode.

For security purposes, Gem-X has a software lock. To unlock the generator : when it
has been switched on, immediately push the buttons of the RCWGX or of the control
board in the following sequence : ( + ) ( + ) ( - ) ( - ) (See. 1.7.1)

2.7.1 Power supply

The remote controller is supplied with two conventional 1,5 V AA-MN1500-LR6 alkaline batteries
or 1,2 V NiMH 1800 mAh accumulators. They are NOT powered by GemX even while wired to
this. Accumulators have to be charged with a dedicated charger outside the remote controller.
Autonomy with NiMH batteries – 1800 mAh is :
18 hours for RCLGX
10 hours for RCWGX

29/52
When the remote controller batteries nearly empty, display flashes with this message :

sends a « STOP X-RAY » order to the GemX

If RCLGX and software are switched off during an exposure they also send an
« interlock! » message to the generator.

2.7.4 Connectivity
Controllers use a 15-pin Sub-D male connector as interface.
RCWGX needs first to be paired with a dedicated pairing cable of 50 cm.
The wired connection is priority on the wireless connection.

31/52
3. SOFTWARE INTERFACE – GEMX CONTROLLER
Once the option PC control is activated, GemX
can be controlled with a PC interface that has
been developed for this generator.
This interface is particularly user-friendly, with
an automatic port detection. kV, uA, exposure
time, generator temperature and battery status
are continuously measured and displayed.
NB: if the software is not available in your
language, please call your local supplier.
The software has also a « maintenance » mode
where the generator can be analysed. A special
menu for advanced user (protected by a
password) can be used to dialog with the
generator and perform special tests and settings
as well as enabling options.

3.1 HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

GemX can be controlled from a computer. The hardware requirements are particularly light :

We recommend to use cables provided by your local dealer but you can also refer to Annex 1
interfacing to build you own.

Take care that Option 1 – RS232 control must be enabled in order to control the
generator with a computer. (See 2.3.4.8 for more details.)

GemX IP address is fixed to 192.168.1.210

Be sure your network card is set on fix IP and on the same subnet.

3.4 SOFTWARE USE

First of all, check that the generator is switched on and properly connected to the
computer (Ethernet or serial link.)

3.4.1 Boot
When the program is launched, a boot window appears. It automatically selects the
communication COM port or Ethernet, tries to establish the communication and download the
generator parameters to initialize the interface. If you have more than one COM port or network
card on the computer, you will have to select the correct one in the first box.

Ethernet communication is called GEI for GemX Ethernet Interface.

33/52
GemX Ethernet searching is automatically enabled. If you want to turn off this feature, click on
“option wheel” - > “Ethernet”. And disable GEI searching.

A1.2 RS-232 COMMUNICATION

Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.

Remote control is possible through a RS232 serial communication protocol. That is the case with
RCLGX, RCWGX and the computer interface.

On the interface connector :

Connect Gnd from computer to Pin 5

Short Pins 10 to 12 to inhibit internal wireless
RS232 parameters :
9600 bauds
No Parity
1 Stop bit
No Data Flux control.
See Annex 2 for the protocol and command lists
NB : in this configuration, interlock enables X-
rays because DTR (Pin 4) is automatically set to
5 Vdc by the RS-232 communication.

37/52
A1.3 USE OF “SIGNALLING” OUTPUTS

Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.

Warning and safety devices (green, yellow, red lamps and buzzer) can be connected to GemX
through the outputs on the interfacing connector.
These outputs can only operate at low power (command signal). For that purpose an internal low
power +12Vdc 300mA supply is available on the interface connector. Since this is not a power
interface, the best way to use it is to drive mechanical or solid state relays.

Use pin 8 of interface connector as a common +12Vdc 300mA

A1.4 EXTERNAL START / STOP

Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.

It is also possible to remotely start and stop the GemX with simple push button as follows. You can
use opto-couplers, open-collector output devices, relays or switches to drive these inputs
1.2mA@12Vdc).
These inputs are active, internally lo w pulled-up to +12V through 10 kΩ resistor. The effect of
these inputs is exactly the same as the OK (Start) and Cancel (Stop) buttons of the keyboard. Use
pin 13 of interface connector as a common 0Vdc.

On the interface connector : Pin 1

Pin 1 : Input : External Stop X ray Pin 11
Pin 11 : Input: External Start X ray Start Stop
Pin 13 : Frame ground, common 0 Vdc Pin 13 Gnd

IMPORTANT NOTE : for “START” (OK) : Use falling edge pulses of more than
500ms and less than 2 s otherwise, a “Release” warning will appear.

38/52
A1.5 INTERLOCK

Check that no source of power / voltage comes from the external circuitry before.
Have in mind that the output pins are not ground insulated.

Interlock can be used to add some « switch securities » on the generator for example to delimit a
security area around the generator and to use it in a bunker or in an X-ray cabinet.
Different GemX configurations are possible (with RCLGX, with RCWGX, with a computer, with a
wire or wireless, ...). According to the configuration, interlock can be used a different way.
Principles
* Interlock entry (pin 4) must be at a voltage equal or higher than +5 Vdc to permit X-ray emission.
* A jumper (JP11) sets pin 4 to +8 Vdc and as a consequence permit X-ray emission automatically.
Pin 4 is internally pulled up.
* Even with JP11, pin 4 is still priority and X-ray emission is impossible if pin 4 is set < +5 Vdc. An
additional interlock switch can therefore be used in parallel to any other one.
* When GemX is interfaced to a computer through a standard RS-232 cable (delivered by Medex)
pin 4 is interfaced with the DTE (pin 4) of the computer. When software runs, pin 4 is set at
voltage between +7 Vdc and + 12 Vdc and X-ray emission is enable. When software doesn't run,
pin 4 is set at a voltage between -7 Vdc and -12 Vdc and X-ray emission is impossible.
* When GemX is interfaced to a remote controller through a standard communication cable
(delivered by Medex) pin 4 is set at +5 Vdc.
* When GemX is connected to a flashing light, its own interlock entry can be used. Pin 4 will be set
at +5 Vdc if the interlock of the flashing light permit X-ray emission.
* If needed, in particular cases, the +5 Vdc signal can be supplied through pin 9

Jumper JP11 is located just next to the serial

communication table.

JP12

JP11

Direct consequences
* When GemX is interfaced with a cable, if JP11 is absent, the removal of the cable stops the X-ray
emission ; if JP11 is present, the removal of the cable doesn't stop the emission.
* When GemX is controlled with the wireless remote controller, JP11 must be present OR a cable
must be used to set pin 4 at +5 Vdc at least (e.g. with a flashing light or in connecting pin 9 to pin
4).

Examples

39/52
* Wireless remote control; no cable, JP11 is present
Pin 4
Jumper JP11 is present and Pin 4 Interlock is internally Interlock
pulled up to 5Vdc, so X-ray emission is permitted. Pin 5
Ground Interlock
Switch NC
Interlock security is activated when pin 4 is connected to
the ground, X-ray emission will be stopped !

For a door security, the door opening release the switch

and this one (NC) connect pin 4 to ground and stop X-ray.

* Wireless remote control; no cable, JP11 is absent

Pin 9
Pin 4 is NOT internally pulled up. Interlock
X-ray emission is not possible unless pin 4 is connected to Pin 4
Interlock
pin 9. switch

* Wired control with a computer (a cable is used to interface the

generator to a computer with a RS-232 connector)

If JP11 is absent, the removal of the cable stops the

emission ; if JP11 is present, the removal of the cable
doesn't stop the emission.

Pins 2, 3, 4 and 5 are used for the communication. The

host computer sets pin 4 to the ground when the software
doesn't run.

It is possible to add an interlock switch in parallel

between between pin 4 and pin 5 (see the first case
described here above) or in serial with DTE (see below)
* Wired control with a computer (a cable is used to interface the
generator to a computer with a RS-232 connector)

If JP11 is absent, the removal of the cable stops the

emission ; if JP11 is present, the removal of the cable
doesn't stop the emission.

Pins 2, 3, 4 and 5 are used for the communication. The

host computer sets pin 4 to the ground when the software
doesn't run.

An interlock switch can be added in serial with DTE

Interlock signal (pin 4) .

40/52
* Wireless remote control ; no cable ; JP11 is present ; an
Pin 4 Interlock
additional start/stop cable switch and interlock is used. Interlock
Pin 5 Switch NC
Interlock security is activated when pin 4 is connected to
Pin 1
the ground, X-ray emission will be stopped.
Pin 11
X-ray emission starts when 11 is grounded, it stops when Start Stop
Pin 13 Gnd
the exposure time is elapsed or when pin 1 is grounded.

A1.6 WAKE-UP BY HOST

RCLGX or host computer (but not RCWGX) can be used to wake-up the generator.
To enable this option, jumper JP12 must be connected inside the generator. Once the Remote
controller or program on host computer will start, the generator will wake-up. This is useful when
the generator is at a long distance from operator and also if the automatic power shut-off option is
activated (See : 2.4.3.6 Auto OFF).

To enable the function, rocker power switch must be -of course- in “ON” position.
This is a hard switch which will automatically cut power in any case.

41/52
A1.7 ETHERNET COMMUNICATION & SDK

A standard Ethernet cable CAT-5 can be used to link GemX with laptop.
Connect the cable between them. LED on GemX Ethernet receptacle turn green when connection
become active.

This section gives you information about protocol for OEM integration. If you're
using Medex GemX Controller Software, you don't need to read this part. GemX
Control Software integrate Ethernet communication capability.

GemX control takes advantages and facilities of standard HTTP protocol. Its commands are
described in annex A2.2. GemX are factory configured with static 192.168.1.210 IP address.

GEI GemX Ethernet Interface protocol

GEI protocol is based on HTTP GET requests. Send a GET request as shown as below and a
standard HTTP answer will contains GemX answer code in plain text.
http://192.168.1.210/Hxxxxxxxx
where xxxxxxxx is the GemX command as described in annex A2.2.

For example, http://192.168.1.210/HXON00000 will start the GemX and send you back a
“XON00000” plain text message to confirm.

To keep GemX communication link alive, a command must be sent at least every
seconds. If no commands are received by the GemX during 1.5s, GemX will stop
shooting (security feature).

Samples code in C are available through you local dealer.

42/52
ANNEX 2 RS232 COMMUNICATION PROCESS AND PROTOCOL
Option 1 must be validated by keycode to enable this protocol process.
( See : 2.3.4.8 Option enable )

Always use STATE CODE to check generator status with this is activated.

This communication process allow you to dialogue with all GemX generators. This is an easy way
to program and control the generator. All the user necessary parameters can be read, modified and
used through this process.

ANNEX 3 BATTERY AND BATTERY CHARGER
A3.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND SAFE USE
GemX uses the latest technology in term of batteries : Lithium Polymer (Li Po). These batteries
have a very density of energy (in term of stored J / kg). Their main use is the car industry and in
some particular applications such as remote-controlled aircraft where as much energy as possible
must be stored for a minimum weight.
Another advantages of the Li Po batteries are :
* high discharge rate (up to 15 C, which means 45 A in the current case)
* excellent storage characteristics ( > 90% after 6 months at 23°C ; decrease with a higher T )
* no memory effect
* high life cycle : ~ 500 cycles
GemX uses a pack made of 2 * 4-cell batteries. Both are permanently checked in term of voltage
and temperature to prevent any misuse.
The charge state of the batteries is indicated on the remote controller. Note that the real status is
indicated when the generator does not emit X-rays but securities are checked during work ( See
A3.2 for more informations )

Nominal voltage 29.8 Vdc Charge temperature 0 /+40 °C

Capacity 5.3 Ah Discharge temperature -20 /+60 °C
Working voltage 28.0 - 33.6 Vdc Storage temperature 0 /+45 °C
Autonomy ~ 300,000 kV.mAs

46/52
Take care of the orientation of the battery pack when you plug this into the generator
The « spur » is towards the front of the generator.

To take the battery out, push the connector towards the back ; the battery is ejected

47/52
A3.2 OPTIMAL USE
The electrical capacity of the batteries is around 300,000 kV.mA.s : it means you can get 100 kV – 1
mA during around 3000 s or you can take around 300 shots of 100 kV – 10 mAs with a fully charge
battery. Nevertheless, in order to get these performances, some « principles of good practice » must
be followed.

1 When the battery is above 50% of charge, shoot at maximum mA achievable

The electrical yield of the generator is higher at 80 kV – 2 mA than at 80 kV – 1 mA.
It means that less energy is taken out of the battery is you shoot 10 s at 80 kV – 2 mA
rather than 20 s at 80 kV – 1 mA even if the X-ray dose will be the same.
2 When the battery is below 50% of charge, reduce mA
When the charge of the battery drops below 30V ( 50% of the charge ), the electrical
currents that it delivers are higher and the securities can stop the generator from
running while the battery is not yet empty.
In this configuration, you can still get more exposures from the battery if you reduce the
mA and increase the exposure time. This is exactly the contrary as what is advised here
above
3 Start by performing high energy shot and later make low energy shot
The electrical yield of the generator is higher at 80 kV – 2 mA than at 160 kV – 1 mA.
This is due to the losses due to high voltage generation. When possible, it is better to
start performing high energy shots when the battery is full and to keep the lower ones
(if any) when the battery is below 50% of charge at rest.

A3.3 BATTERY CHARGER

Battery is charged externally.
Connect this to the battery charger.

Charge time is around 4 hours with the

following steps indicated by the lamp of the
battery charger :

Fast charge mode

Battery is charged at 80% (after 2 hours) Left : Battery charger ; Right : Battery pack
Battery is charged at 100% (after 4 hours) Charger Serial Number starts with BC (Battery
Charger) and battery pack BP
