Introductory Message
Welcome to General Chemistry 1!
The General Chemistry 1Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the
leaching-learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning
Competency (MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you
and the learner. This will be made available to the learners with
references/links to ease the independent learning.

Everything you see here on Earth is matter. Matter is any material that
you see around including those which are intangible.
1
Chemical properties are those characteristics of a substance that cannot
be determined without altering its composition. Some examples of chemical
properties are taste, toxicity, oxidizability, flammability, and reactivity with
other substances.
In this learning activity, you will learn how to determine the properties of
matter and its uses in your everyday life.
Directions: Given a statement below, list down and classify the properties of pure
water as physical or chemical. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.
Pure water has a density of approximately 1 g/mL, does not burn, normally boils
at 100oC, causes iron to rust, in small amount is colorless, reacts with sodium to
yield hydrogen gas, tasteless, and odorless.
Directions: Copy the table and classify the following properties as intensive or
extensive property:

Activity 3:
Directions: Study the table below showing the observable
characteristics/properties and uses of the given materials. Answer the
questions that follow in a separate sheet of paper.

D. Answer the following.
Carlos has a bicycle. His father reminds him to keep it in the dry garage.
Unfortunately, he was left out in the yard for three days during a steady
rain.
1. Why do you think Carlos’ father reminds him to store his bicycle in the
dry garage?

VI. Answer Key
Questions:
How do you know they are different materials?
They are different materials because they have their unique properties and uses.
The- properties of materials determine their uses. Ex. Glass is used in construction and building
windows because it is hard and transparent.
He reminds Carlos to be neat and caring in using his bicycle by keeping it inside the dry garage
because he knows that leaving outside may cause damage to some of the parts exposed to rain
and cold air.
He found out that some parts were rusted. Exposing the bicycle to the cold outside air can cause
damage. The moisture condenses on the inside of the frame, which leads to rust. Some metals react
with air, acid, and water which damage the parts and longevity.
If you were Carlos, what realization you made after what happened?
He realized to take care of his bike well by keeping it inside the dry garage and wipe the frames
after using it because humid air and rain will react to iron and becomes rust. It may degrade the
material and can cause damage once it rusted. These are properties that do not depend on the
amount of substance present. The examples are density, melting point, boiling point, and freezing
point.
