PNEUMATIC The figure and table ″PNEUMATIC - CONTROLS/INDICATORS″
show the system controls/indicators and their functions.
INTRODUCTION
The pneumatic system uses and controls the pneumatic power sup-
ply from the engines, the APU, or from a ground supply. The system
controls the bleed air and supplies it to these systems:
− Engine start.
− Air conditioning and pressurization.
− Ice protection.
− Potable water tank pressurization.
DESCRIPTION
The pneumatic system has these functions:
− To control the bleed air and supply it to the pneumatic users.
− To control the 14th/9th switching priorities in relation to the aircraft
operation.
− To shut off the high-stage valve and engine bleed valve in case of
nacelle fire.
− To prioritize some systems in relation to the operation condition.
− To prevent reverse flow on each side of the pneumatic sources.
− To supply bleed temperature control and overtemperature protec-
tion.
The PNEUMATIC includes this (these) subsystem(s):
− DISTRIBUTION ................................................................. (36-10)
− INDICATING ..................................................................... (36-20)
The figure ″PNEUMATIC - MAIN COMPONENTS″ shows the main
components of the system.

COMPONENTS flight as long as the engine bleed stays off or segregated.
The figure ″PNEUMATIC - SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE″ shows the
DISTRIBUTION (36-10)
system interfaces.
The pneumatic distribution system has two subsystems which control
the supply of bleed air to the aircraft.
INDICATING (36-20)
OPERATION
In normal operation, all lights on the control panel must be off. The
BLEED 1/2 switches must be pushed in. This permits the Engine
Bleed Valves (EBV) to open as soon as engine speed (N2) is more
than 56%. Bleed air is thus supplied to the aircraft systems.
The Cross-Bleed Valve (CBV) switch stays in the AUTO position. It
permits the CBV to stay closed and to open if the anti-ice is set to ON
or if a cross-start is in operation. The usual position of the APU bleed
switch is OFF.
If a failure of bleed air supply to one side occurs the related bleed
switch must be released. After this, a striped bar on the switch comes
on to show the switch position. The ″BLD 1/2 VLV CLSD″ advisory
message comes on, on the EICAS display, showing the valve posi-
tion. When the CBV is open, the ″CROSS BLD OPEN″ advisory
message comes on, on the EICAS display.
In ground operation, the APU bleed can be used for engine starts or
for ECS operation. To open the ABV, the APU BLEED switch must be
pressed. A striped bar on the switch will then come on to show that
the switch is pressed. A white indicator OPEN comes on, on the
switch, to show the valve position. The APU bleed can also be used in

DISTRIBUTION
INTRODUCTION
The pneumatic distribution system has two subsystems which control
the supply of bleed air to the aircraft.
DESCRIPTION
The pneumatic distribution system receives compressed and hot air
from the sources below:
− Engine low stage (P2.7).
− Engine high stage (P3.0).
− APU.
− Ground source.
It controls and supplies this air to these users:
− Engine start.
− Air conditioning and pressurization.
− Ice protection.
− Potable water tank pressurization.
Besides its two subsystems, the pneumatic distribution system also
has two other components: the cross-bleed valve and the ground
connection.
The DISTRIBUTION includes this (these) sub-subsystem(s):
− ENGINE PNEUMATIC BLEED ......................................... (36-11)
− APU PNEUMATIC BLEED ............................................... (36-12)
The figure ″DISTRIBUTION - MAIN COMPONENTS″ shows the loca-
tion of the system main components.

COMPONENTS The pneumatic system’s functional logic opens or closes automati-
cally the CBV, if the Cross Bleed Knob is on AUTO position, during
CROSS BLEED VALVE engine start, depending on the available pneumatic source: APU,

The valve lets engine bleed air from one or both engines supply the

OPERATION The figure ″DISTRIBUTION - SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM″ shows the
operation of the system.
The pneumatic distribution system controls the supply of bleed air to
the air conditioning system, engine starting, and anti-ice system. The figure ″DISTRIBUTION - CROSS BLEED ELECTRICAL
DIAGRAM″ shows the electrical operation of the system.
The valves installed on the engines and in the pylon control the
engine pneumatic distribution (Ref. 36-11). The APU bleed valve
controls the APU pneumatic distribution (Ref. 36-12 ).
The pneumatic distribution system prioritizes engine bleed in relation
to APU bleed. If the LH EBV is open and/or the RH EBV and CBV are
open, the APU bleed valve is electrically closed.
The cross-bleed valve permits airflow to the two ECUs if the APU is
ON or if only one engine is supplying the pneumatic system.
There is a rotary switch on the overhead panel to control the CBV
operation. The switch has three positions (CLOSED, AUTO, and
OPEN) and it usually stays in AUTO.
When the CBV switch is in AUTO, the CBV will automatically open if:
− A cross-start is selected.
− The anti-ice system is on.
If the CBV switch is set to OPEN, the valve will open independently of
the system configuration. If the switch is set to CLOSED, the valve
closes independently of the system configuration.
The APU is usually used on the ground to supply pneumatic energy to
the ECUs (Ref. 21-00) and to the engine starting system (Ref. 80-00).
If the APU is not available on the ground, the ground connection can
supply the engine starting. To do that, a ground pressure source must
be connected to the ground connection on the right side of the rear
fuselage.
The pneumatic system indications can be monitored through the
EICAS display and the MFD (Ref. 36-20).
