MAXIMUM POWER
TRANSFER
At the end of this module, the student
should be able to:
1. Discuss the characteristics of a circuit
delivering maximum power.
2. Determine the resistance of the load
such that the source will deliver
maximum power.
3. Calculate the maximum power delivered
to the load.

SOURCE TRANFORMATION
MODULE 6B

SOURCE
TRANSFORMATION
At the end of this module, the student should
be able to:
1. Transform a voltage source to its equivalent
current source.
2. Transform a current source to its equivalent
voltage source.
3. Simplify circuit problem using the concept of
source transformation.

SOURCE TRANSFORMATION
• A source transformation is the process of replacing a voltage source in
series with a resistor R by a current source in parallel with a resistor R,
or vice versa.
Example 1.

Consider the circuit shown in Figure 1; the goal is to find the current
(denoted by i) through the central 5 Ω resistor.

Let us now replace this combination with a voltage source, V = 1 A × 10 Ω = 10

V, and a 10 Ω series resistor.
The process involves replacing the voltage source V in series with a resistor R with
an equivalent network which has a current source I=V/R in parallel with a resistor
R.

I = (8/3)(15/4)/((15/4)+5)
= 8/7 A

Example 2.

Find v2 of the circuit shown below using source transformation.

So, the VCVS becomes a VCCS whose transconductance is 0.25S.
The resulting diagram in figure 3 still has the control voltage v2 in
place, as required.
