INTRO ACTIVITY FOR ETHICS

1. Ethics is defined as the science of human conduct that is concerned with the morality of
actions. It is considered standard and universal for the whole society. It also serves as a
reference or guiding principle for what is right or wrong behavior. Likewise, it provides
the right action, duty, and obligation.

The terms ethics and morality are often used interchangeably because both have
something to do with good or bad or right or wrong. However, morality is much more
subjective. It is a personal principle. It is something we believe to be true. A person's
morals can be different from society's. Furthermore, the morality of a person is
influenced by family, culture, or religion. Unlike that, ethics is usually established in
work, institutions, or organizations.

2. Practical Philosophy is defined as the study of "practical thinking' that emphasizes values,
attitudes, and behaviors. I think that is the reason why we consider ethics as practical
philosophy because it requires thinking and judgment. Besides, Ethics is also called
"moral philosophy" which is concerned with what is right or wrong and what is good or
bad. Ethics presents a code of values to guide a person's choices, and actions and these
actions will define a person's course of life.

3. One of the most controversial examples of an ethical issue is the death penalty. The first
concern here is the value of human life. Many people are against this kind of punishment
because they believe that human life is valuable, even that of murderers. The second
concern is the execution of the innocent. A lot of people were executed before and then
later proven not guilty. The death penalty will sooner or later kill innocent people due to
the failure of the justice system. Another point here is that not all punishment is applied
fairly across the country and, it may only cause discrimination to the person involved.
Furthermore, retribution is morally wrong because we cannot teach that killing is wrong
by doing the same thing.

Besides, the death penalty would only take away a person's life and would not reasonably
punish the person. Also, some people may think that sentencing the death of a person
who commits a crime would prevent another wrongdoing. But in fact, research has
already proven that the death penalty is not more effective than life-long imprisonment.
