Introduction

Thank you for choosing IDEA.

IDEA® is a powerful, user-friendly data analysis tool designed to help auditors, accountants and
other finance professionals perform data analysis quickly to help improve audits and identify control
breakdowns.

IDEA can be installed on multiple machines within your organization. It includes a complimentary
15-day Provisional license that lets you use IDEA at full functionality for 15 days. After the
Provisional license period, you must do one of the following to continue using IDEA:

l Register an IDEA Standard license

An IDEA Standard license is a standalone license that is tied to the machine on which it is
installed. If required, you can revoke the license and move it to another machine. All license
management actions, such as register, renew, and revoke are performed using CaseWare
IDEA License Manager which is installed with IDEA.

l Connect to an IDEA Network license

You must connect to a CaseWare Network License Server that contains IDEA Network licenses
to continue using IDEA.

Your registered license gives you access to IDEA for a determined amount of time based on your
subscription.

Your purchase includes the following:

l IDEA 11.1 software

l CaseWare IDEA License Manager software (installed with IDEA)

This guide details the upgrade and installation instructions for IDEA 11.1.

Section 1: System Requirements

CaseWare IDEA License Manager Accessibility

If you are running IDEA and CaseWare IDEA License Manager behind a firewall or proxy, ensure the
following:

l Ports 80 and 443 must be accessible.

l Port 5093 must be accessible for IDEA Network.

l The following two license servers must be accessible:

l https://elicense.caseware.com

l https://elicense2.caseware.com

Language Support
If you are installing a non-English edition of IDEA:

l You must also install the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 Language Pack
(www.microsoft.com/download).

l Non-English editions of IDEA are only supported on operating systems of the same language
and regional settings (e.g., French IDEA on a French operating system).

Technical Notes
l Coexistence of IDEA and CaseWare Network License Server

In a network implementation, do not install IDEA on the same machine as CaseWare Network
License Server as it could corrupt the licensing system.

l Coexistence of Different IDEA Versions

Different IDEA versions (e.g., IDEA 10 and IDEA 11) cannot exist on the same machine.

l Microsoft Office

IDEA is compatible with Microsoft Office 2010 (64-bit) or later.

Microsoft Access Import and Export Requirements

Microsoft Access Database Engine 2016 (64-bit) is required to import Microsoft Access
files or export IDEA databases to Microsoft Access files.

l CaseWare Working Papers

l IDEA is compatible with CaseWare Working Papers 2017, 2018, and 2019.

l IDEA only supports a single implementation of CaseWare Working Papers. Concurrent

installed versions of CaseWare Working Papers are not supported.

11
CI303 IDEA Installation Guide

l Silent Install

If IDEA is installed silently with the parameter to centralize all IDEA projects and files for all
users, the Samples project is locked to the first user to launch IDEA. Similarly, the Tutorial
project is locked to the first user to access that project. If other users try to access those
locked projects, they will not have access to the project's Project Overview and Library
features. Refer to the Locking and Unlocking Desktop Projects topic in the IDEA help for more
information.

l Project Overview

Due to supporting software upgrades in IDEA 10.4, the Project Overview feature for a
database is not backward compatible after you open that database in IDEA 11.1.

12
Section 2

Upgrading

Welcome back! We are excited that you have chosen to upgrade your IDEA software. You will be
getting the latest features, enhancements, and bug fixes that IDEA has to offer. For more details on
the IDEA 11.1 release, please refer to the Release Notes.

All IDEA users must contact their CaseWare IDEA Partner to get the latest version of IDEA.

CaseWare Passport
IDEA 10 and later user can access CaseWare Passport at any time to verify if an update is
available.

IDEA 10.x or Earlier Users

IDEA 11.1 is a 64-bit application that can only run on a 64-bit operating system. Due to this
enhancement and extensive licensing changes, you cannot automatically upgrade to IDEA 11.1 from
IDEA 10.x or earlier. You must perform a manual uninstall of your current IDEA software before
installing IDEA 11.1.

IDEA 11 Users
The upgrade process automatically uninstalls your existing version of IDEA and installs the latest
IDEA software (including CaseWare IDEA License Manager, if applicable) on the machine that
currently hosts the IDEA software. You will not have to re-register your license.

Upgrade Process
1. Contact your CaseWare IDEA Partner to get the latest version of IDEA.

2. Follow the install instructions to upgrade your software.

Section 3

Appendix I

Installing CaseWare IDEA License Manager

CaseWare IDEA License Manager is a license management tool that lets you manage your
licensed IDEA products. IDEA Standard users can register a license online, register a license offline,
renew a license, and revoke a license.

The CaseWare IDEA License Manager window lists the following license types:

l Provisional License: A Provisional license gives you full access to the product's features for
15 consecutive days from the time you first launch the product. During the Provisional license
period, you are prompted to register your license every time you load the product.

l Registered License: A registered license has an associated authorization code and lock code
that is specific to the machine on which it is installed. It also has an expiry date.

By default, CaseWare IDEA License Manager installs automatically with IDEA. However, you can
choose to install CaseWare IDEA License Manager separately from the IDEA installation.

Important
CaseWare IDEA License Manager must reside on the same machine as IDEA.

Provisional License
If you are installing CaseWare IDEA License Manager and IDEA separately, you must install
the CaseWare IDEA License Manager first and then install IDEA to engage the Provisional
license.

To install CaseWare IDEA License Manager:

1. Run the Installation File

From the IDEA installation package, navigate to and double-click LicenseManager_

Setup.exe.

2. Installation Wizard

the IDEA help.
Appendix III

Performing a Silent Install

l The upgrade process through a silent install is not supported.

l Your user account must have local Administrator privileges on the computer on which
you will run the silent install command.
l The End User License Agreement is unavailable for viewing during the silent install
procedure. If you do not agree to the terms in the End User License Agreement, do
not perform a silent install of IDEA.

Command
Setup.exe /S /v" /qn /norestart ACCEPTEULA=1"

Optional Parameters
Command Description
INSTALLDIR=<full path of destination folder> Set the custom folder for installing the program files.

IDEA_DOCUMENTS_FOLDER=<full path of destination folder> Set a central location for storing IDEA project information for all
users.

LMINSTALLDIR=<full path to destination folder> Set the custom folder for installing CaseWare IDEA License
Manager program files.

ALLOWSENDINGMETADATA=0 Disable automatic system information collection. By default,

automatic system information collection is enabled. The default
setting is enabled when this optional parameter is excluded or
when it is set to 1.

Example using optional parameters:

Setup.exe /S /v" /qn /norestart ACCEPTEULA=1 INSTALLDIR=C:\InstallIDEAFolder IDEA_

DOCUMENTS_FOLDER=C:\DOCUMENTSFOLDER"

Ensure to add a space between optional parameters and that quotation marks (") appear after v and
at the end of the command.
CI303 IDEA Installation Guide

IDEA_DOCUMENTS_FOLDER Parameter
After a default silent installation, the "My IDEA Documents" folder and its sub-folders (IDEA
Projects, Local Library, etc.) are created in each user's Documents system folder. You can
use the optional parameter to set a central location to store all IDEA project information for
all users. When you specify a custom location, the sub-folders (IDEA Projects, Local
Library, etc.) are created under the specified location.
Note the following:
l If a System Administrator is performing a silent install and using the IDEA_
DOCUMENTS_FOLDER parameter, the IDEA Documents folder for existing restricted
users is not updated to use the specified central location. In the Windows Registry
Editor, locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software and delete the CaseWare IDEA
folder. The central location specified by IDEA_DOCUMENTS_FOLDER is used the next
time the restricted users open IDEA.
l If the specified location is invalid to users (e.g., they do not have sufficient
permissions to access the location, the name is too long, etc.), when the user
launches IDEA, the IDEA Documents folder defaults to C:\Program Files\CaseWare
IDEA\IDEA\UserFiles\Samples on the user's machine.

Exit Codes
IDEA silent installs support exit codes. Exit codes tell the Administrator the status of the installation.

To display an exit code at the end of the installation, prefix the command line with:

start /wait

Exit codes are returned in the following format:

echo Exit Code is %errorlevel%

The four most commonly returned exit codes are:

Exit Code Explanation

-4 Invalid command line

-3 Installation canceled by user

-1 General error

0 Installation successfully completed
