ABSTRACT

The study aimed at investigating poor reading habit among the students at secondary
level in district Peshawar. The main objective of the study is to investigate the causes of
poor reading habit among the students at secondary level.

The study is descriptive in nature. The data is collected through questionnaires. Two
questionnaires were designed, one each for students and teachers. The data collected
through questionnaire was organized, analyzed and interpreted accordingly.

The main purpose of this research is to find out why students are not taking interest in
reading material other than textbooks and what the main reasons are. They need proper
guidance and need to know the importance of reading.

It was concluded that poor finance, teachers, parents, electronic media and home
environment were the key causes of poor reading habit.

It was recommended that the teachers should encourage the students to do independent
readings, select good books for themselves and to read widely at their own pace both at
home and school.
