Q2. What IB concepts does your chosen text make salient or direct connections with? (300 – 350
words) Marks 5

At first sight, “We Can Do It!” seems to be a strong and stunning picture that is readily
relevant to industrial employees of both genders. Bright and strong hues attract the
attention and excite the spectator in a simple and appealing way. Blue, red, and yellow
are rich primary hues that produce a work that is both vibrant and energetic. The blue's
heaviness contrasts with the red and yellow's brightness, giving the impression of
professionalism and industrialism. The dark blue emphasises the border of the
billboard, the woman's clothing, and the form of the conversation bubble. A red polka
dot scarf pulls back the woman's hair, making it both functional and feminine for an
industrial worker. The yellow backdrop contrasts with the blue and pulls the eye in at
first glance, making the poster simple to see from afar, such as across a manufacturing
floor. The piece's lettering is sans serif, simple to read, and characteristic of the era's
painted sign style.

The psychology underlying each hue adds to the piece's overall comprehension. Yellow
inspires feelings of cheerfulness and confidence, and is frequently linked with
optimism and self-esteem. The hue, as shown in the poster backdrop, encourages
employees to be happy in their job. The blue, on the other hand, evokes contemplation
and a sense of serenity (Hill). The combination of the two hues balances the yellow's
bright optimism with the blue's colder tone. The crimson looks as macho and
passionate in a burst of defiance, an odd choice given the scarf is worn by a lady.

Despite its industrial origins, the poster makes strong assertions about femininity,
prescribing, whether intentionally or not, how women should look while working. With
plucked eyebrows, enlarged eyes, curled hair, and high cheekbones, the lady portrayed
is small-framed, white, and groomed to have feminine features. The poster not only
motivates employees to do their duties, but it also prescribes how they should dress
while doing so.
