Getting Started
i What is a phrasal verb?
A phrasal verb is a verb plus one or two particles.
Here are some common verbs: bring, get, go, put, take, turn.
TLic are some common particles: up, down, out, in, off, on.
Some teachers cali them prepositions or adverbs, but is easier to
think of them as all `particles'.
Here are some exampIes of phrasal verbs:

To understand what a phrasal verb is, let us look at
the verb GET:
GET as an ordinary verb: Can you get me a
glass of milk?
GET with one or two particles to forni

3 Identifying phrasal verbs
There are thousands of phrasal verbs in English. Here is an exercise to help you
discover and Iearn these verbs as you study English.
Look at these extracts from three articles. There are twelve phrasal verbs. Underline
them and write them on the lines beside the texts.

4 What do phrasal verbs mean?
It is often possible to understand what a phrasal verb means by looking at its particle.
As you do the exercises in this book, try to notice patterns of meaning and build up
lists based on these patterns. Although it is not always possible to finti a pattern,
thinking about the meaning of the particle will help you to understand and rernember
the phrasal verbs you meet.
Below you will see some of the meanings of the six most common particles used with phrasal
verbs.
SALES FiGURES
UP
An upward movement:
We left early, just as the sun was coming up.
An increase, an improvement:
Sales have gone up in the past year.
Completing, ending:
We used up all the eggs when we made the calce.
"Sales- are UP!"
Approachin g:
A taxi drew up just as we were thinking of calling one.
DOWN
A downward movement:
The teacher told the pupiis to sit clown.
A decrease:
That music is too loud! Turn it down!
