SOGIE Bill: Gender Equality or Revenge of the LGBT

I. INTRODUCTION
1. In the past few years, people from the queer community have gradually received
acceptance from the society. This is because of the rising movements of Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Transexual to keep the world aware of their roles and validity in the
society, as a result people began to discuss and educate themselves about the social
construct of gender and concerns about their rights as an individual and multiple laws
have been made to give Filipinos the same rights as everyone. Nonetheless, the social
conditions within their identity are still left uncertain to most individuals due to the
constant discriminatory acts and stereotyping done towards them by individuals.
2. Everyone should be able to practice their civil rights without the hindrance of inequality
and discrimination.

II. BODY
Sogie bill is not an opportunity to legalize same sex marriage
1. According to section 3 of the SOGIE equality bill, this bill will not beneficially
affect the marginalized group to any political, economic, social and cultural life.
As requested by Rep. Geraldine Roman, the lawmakers are to read thoroughly
the SOGIE bill in the chambers. Adding to her statement that let’s not be carried
away by extrapolations and other scenarios from other countries that are not
related. The researchers would also like to add that the “essence” of the bill is
that the lawmakers need to focus on which all Filipinos and LGBT community
will have the same rights when it comes to the services from schools, work, and
even the government, and not be used to abuse on the streets.

Sogie bill will not give the community special rights

2. As per Rep. Geraldine Roman, the SOGIE bill is about the people in the LGBT
Community who are witnessing discrimination every day in their daily lives. The
law’s only bases are the sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression and
the law does not have any provision that requires having a license. It doesn’t
lessen the role of a parent but challenges them to raise an LGBT child and
consider themselves as an LGBT parent. According to the section 7 of the SOGIE
BILL, this act will not give authority to the state to unduly interfere with
legitimate exercise by the parents or guardian to discipline their children. The
bill also does not mention any harm or change to religion and freedom speech,
it is solely to give protection.
III. CONCLUSION

As suggested by the Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto, the SOGIE bill opens
up the backdoor of the Philippines meaning we are to experience conflicts and
uncharted law dilemmas. Misunderstandings between the senate certainly
needed clarification. Further rework of the law was requested by Rep.
Geraldine, she also emphasized that the essence of the bill is the one which
lawmaker must focus on. She claimed that every community will have the same
rights when it comes to services, works, authority, and not to be abused on the
streets. Lastly, the inquiry of Rep. Eddy is refuted by the fact that the SOGIE bill
suggests the parental role is to be challenged to raise an LGBT child in a new era
of lawmaking.
