1. What are basic consumer rights provided by the Bill?

The 1962 Consumer bill of Rights stated that every person has four basic consumer
rights, the right to be informed, the right to choose, the right to safety, and the right to be
heard. These rights received a lot of attention from the consumer movement, a movement to
pass laws protecting consumers from unfair and unsafe business practices. Over the years,
three other rights were added: the right to have problems corrected, the right to consumer
education, and the right to service. The first right is the right to be informed. The right to be
informed means to be given the facts needed to make an informed choice, and to be protected
against dishonest or misleading advertising and labelling. This is our guide in choosing the
right product that we are going to buy, without the information needed consumers will
become easy to deceive by those sellers. Next is the right to choose. The right to free choice
among product offerings states that consumers should have a variety of options provided by
different companies from which to choose. The government has taken many steps to ensure
the availability of a healthy environment open to competition through legislation including
limits on concept ownership through patent law, prevention of monopolistic business
practices through anti-trust legislation, and the outlaw of price cutting and gouging. The third
right is the right to safety. The assertion of this right is aimed at the defense of consumers
against injuries caused by products other than automobile vehicles, and implies that products
should cause no harm to their users if such use is executed as prescribed. According to my
research, the right was further formalized in 1972 by the US federal government through the
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This organization has jurisdiction over
thousands of commercial products, and powers that allow it to establish performance
standards and require product testing and warning labels. The fourth right is the right to be
heard. This right has the ability of consumers to voice complaints and concerns about a
product in order to have the issue handled efficiently and responsively. While no federal
agency is tasked with the specific duty of providing a forum for this interaction between
consumer and producer, certain outlets exist to aid consumers if difficulty occurs in
communication with an aggrieving party. In order to maintain balance between the
consumers and producers, these rights lead the way to maintain fairness between the side of
seller and buyer.
2. What are the 3 consumer rights have been added to the Consumer Bill of rights since
1962?

Basically, there are only four rights in the 1962 Consumer Bill of rights. But over
the years, three other rights were added: the right to have problems corrected, the right to
consumer education, and the right to service. The right to have problems corrected
happens when you purchase a good and something is wrong with it you have the right to
get a refund or a new item. For Example, if you buy a bike from Target and the tire
breaks on the way home you should have the right to return it. You have the right to
return an item. You must have your receipt and all warranties to return an item. This right
ensures that the consumers will get the best quality of product that he needs and to avoid
the waste of his/her money. Next is the right to consumers education. Consumer
education is pivotal within the buying society. Consumers are informed on how to make
better buying decisions that directly affect the functioning of the economy. Consumer
education has become more relevant due to the rapid growth of products in the market.
Consumers need to stay informed on the effects of the economy in order to make the best
decisions. In addition, Consumers are privileged to have rights; however, they come with
certain responsibilities. For example, it is a consumer's responsibility to use products for
their intended purpose and to properly store and dispose of merchandise. Lastly, the right
to service. The right to service simply means the producers must render services and
entertain their buyers. Consumers may expect convenience, the right to be treated with
respect, an appropriate response to their needs and problems, and good quality design and
workmanship in a product. Additionally, consumers may expect a courteous manner
while in a store or other establishment even if a purchase is not made. Service means
access to essential goods and services to include adequate food, shelter, clothing, health
care, education and sanitation, basic needs that should be available to all consumers.

3. How does the Bait and Switch work? Why is it unfair to consumers?

According to the definition, bait and switch is a morally suspect sales tactic that
lures customers in with specific claims about the quality or low prices on items that turn
out to be unavailable in order to upsell them on a similar, pricier item. It is considered a
form of retail sales fraud, though it takes place in other contexts. I remember what
happened to me last November 2020, I experienced to be one of the victims of this bait
and switch strategy of sellers. I ask my friends if they know someone who sells lambo
jogging pants and jersey shirts even if its second hand or already use, in that way I can
save some of my money. One of My friend recommended a seller of ukay-ukay from
Sanchez Mira which is a bit far from our place. I contacted the person to messenger and
ask him if he sells jogging pants and jersey shirts and he replied yes, he showed the items
and mentioned the price of each. I was very happy because the price is good and the
items came from hongkong. I decided to walk in in their store for me to choose easily and
look for other items that I need. I travelled almost an hour to get there and when I reach
my destination, I saw the seller waiting for me in front of their store and I’m so glad that
they know how to handle their customers. When I we enter in their shop, I was surprise
that the seller I talk to is apologizing to me because it was un expected that the item he
showed me was already bought and now out of stock. I was then disappointed because
those items made me travel for almost an hour and unknowingly it is already unavailable.
The seller, showed me another set of jerseys and jogging pants and told me that it is
branded and more original compared to what he showed to me. I have no choice either, I
bought four shirts and four jogging pants in a higher price. Bait and Switch method was
very unfair to consumers. They did not bough the product they want to buy instead they
bought other similar products but in higher price. So, it is very important that Sellers
must provide prior notice to the consumers if the product is still available or not.
