Guidelines for Writing Testing Phase Solutions

Welcome! Before you start writing and submitting solutions during the testing phase,
here are the instructions on how to do that:

❏ Please visit admin.slader.com/account/login/.

To access the page, you’ll need to use the following authorization credentials:
Username: moderator Password: kumu123
Log in using your email address and the password sent to it.
Let me know if you’re facing any issues.
❏ During the testing phase, you must upload solutions to 10 problems from a book
assigned to you. It doesn't matter if they are already solved or not. Try to choose
exercises from different chapters of the textbook to display your knowledge.
❏ Solutions have to be written by you. Plagiarism is not going to be tolerated and
there won’t be a second chance if we find out that you are copying solutions from
other sites or solutions manuals.
❏ Solutions need to be submitted directly on the page (there is a KateX/Markdown
compiler embedded in the page where you should submit your work). Even if you
are familiar with KateX/Markdown please read the Katex/Markdown Guide
because it contains details on how KateX works on Slader and it also comes with
some tips and tricks on how to write good solutions.
❏ When you locate the exercise you want to solve (page and exercise number),
navigate to that page associated with your textbook on Slader. Make sure that the
ISBN in the URL bar is correct. In the image below you can see the parts of the URL.
Textbook below is just an example, it does not have to be the textbook you are
working on.

❏ Once you locate the exercise, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the
Add solution button. When you click on the button, KateX editor is going to
appear and this is where you should write your solution. It consists of explanation
boxes and a final solution box.
❏ Note that we don’t allow regular users to add images to their solutions because in
the past we mostly received selfies and spam messages. If you want to add images
to your solution please contact me.
❏ While solving problems, you must keep track of the time you are spending on each
solution. To record your time, you may use a timer or any timekeeping
device/application. We require you to fill out a google sheet for recording your
solutions and time, which is attached below. You can only see the attached log
sheet. Make a local copy and fill that in.

TESTING PHASE LOG SHEET

Once you are done filling out this sheet, rename it with “Testing Phase <Insert Your
Username Here>” then send the link to the hiring content manager.

Important Reminder: You do not count the time needed for learning KateX/Markdown
or any other concepts and tools (e.g., Desmos, Geogebra, Matlab, Python, etc) required
for doing this job.

Some additional guidelines on how to write solutions

❏ Try to write solutions with the right amount of explanations. Do not over explain
but also make sure students are able to understand the solution.
❏ Single column solutions are preferred.
❏ Use colors and bold text to emphasize important parts of your solution, but also do
not go overboard with coloring to confuse students.
❏ Use colors and bold text to emphasize important parts of your solution, but also do
not go overboard with coloring to confuse students.
❏ Do not copy anything from the textbook word for word because that is a violation
of copyright. You should not copy definitions, theorems, examples, etc. What you
can do is write a reference like “According to Theorem 4.2…”
❏ Do not copy the exercise either. Students have the textbook and know what the
exercise is about. You should start with the first step in your solution, not with the
text of the exercise.
❏ Make sure that your solutions are aligned with the textbook. This means that you
should use the same notations as in the book. Also, you should not use tools,
theorems and formulas that have not yet been covered in the book.
❏ In the RESULT box at the bottom of your solutions, please refrain from copying
your entire solution. You must only include the final answer in the RESULT box.
A. If your final answer is a number or an equation, then you can put the same
number/equation as the final answer.
B. If your final answer includes several numbers and equations, then you can
put them all in the box and separate them by a comma or you may use a line
break (\\).
C. If the question asks for an explanation or a graph, then a specific pattern,
“See the explanation”, should be written in the RESULT box.
This pattern is format-sensitive - S is written as an uppercase letter and
there is a period at the end.
❏ We’re working on making our website more suitable for learning. In the near
future we will make some changes to our UI, which will allow users to reveal one
step(of solution) at a time, thus giving the users the opportunity to solve the
exercise themselves before revealing the complete solution.
Please make sure that your solutions are written in a step-style manner, and that
you’re using enough steps(cells) for your answers. If you’re not sure what a
step-style solution is, please check these slides or this video.
❏ For graphs, you can access free, online options such as Desmos and GeoGebra. If
the situation arises that you need to draw free body diagrams, experimental setups,
and other illustrations, you can use any software you’re familiar with, or reach out
to your Content Manager for advice/suggestion. . Please ensure that it has all the
correct, relevant features and labels.
❏ Once you have submitted your solutions, these are going to be evaluated by our
experts using a scoring rubric, which consists of a checklist of items/evaluative
criteria, each with an equivalent number of points. You must have a passing score of
at least 20 points in order to go through the next step of the hiring process. Here’s
the Scoring Rubric.
❏ To give you a better visualization of how a good solution looks like, you can see
some Solution Samples.

● Lastly, you will only be compensated hourly for this job once you are
hired/recruited as a content contributor. These 10 pilot solutions during the testing
phase will not be counted as your working hours. You are only paid at an hourly
rate once you become an official content contributor. Pay rates will be further
discussed by the hiring Content Manager.

If you have any questions or clarifications, feel free to contact the hiring Contact Manager.
