INTRODUCTION
This lesson will introduce the concept of Information Communication Technology. This lesson includes what ICT means,
its concept and current state of technology. It will also discuss the difference between the Web and Internet. It will also
outline important technological milestone in the evolution of web technology and how it contributed to the way we
share and transmit information today.

LEARNING CONTENT
What is ICT?

ICT is an umbrella term referring to communication hardware or software that allows the access, storage, transmission
and manipulation of information. In term of Hardware this encompasses radio, television, communication devices
(smart and non-smart phones), desktops computers, laptops and network hardware and technologies. In term of
Software this includes applications and platforms that allows information to be accessed, stored, transmitted and
manipulated.

I. Current State of ICT

Emerging technologies and Trends in ICT

 Convergent Technologies: Convergence happens when multiple different devices combine into a single gadget
because of technological advancement. Example: Smartphone (capable of doing the functions of a television, radio,
computer, telephone, camera and GPS as a single device.)

 Social Media: Social media are software, applications or platforms that allow users to communicate in an online
social communities or network. It is also defined as a website, application, or online channel that enables web users to
create, co-create, discuss, modify, and exchange user generated content.

 Mobile Technologies: It is a term for devices that are easily carried and allows fast means of communication. These
devices run with the aid of a software that manages all the operation within the device known as OPERATING SYSTEM.

Different Mobile Operating System

a. iOS: iOS or iPhone Operating System is a mobile operating system created and developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for
its hardware. It is the operating system that presently powers many of the company's mobile devices, including the
iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch
b. Android: It is an open source OS developed by Google. It is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as
smartphones and tablets. Being open source means mobile phone companies use this OS for free.
c. Blackberry OS: It is a proprietary mobile operating system developed by BlackBerry Limited for its BlackBerry line of
smartphone handheld devices.
d. Windows Phone OS: It is a family of mobile operating systems developed by Microsoft for smartphones as the

replacement successor to Windows Mobile and Zune. Windows Phone features a new user interface derived from Metro
Design Language

e. Symbian: It is a mobile operating system and computing platform designed for smartphones. Symbian was originally
developed as a closed source OS for PDAs in 1998 by Symbian Ltd. The original smartphone OS; used by Nokia devices.
f. WebOS: It isan Open WebOS or LG WebOS, is a multitasking operating system for smart devices such as Smart TVs
and it has been used as a mobile operating system.
g. Windows Mobile: An operating system developed by Microsoft for smartphones and Pocket PCs.

II. World Wide Web (WWW) vs Internet

Difference between Internet and www

Internet is the actual interconnection of computers and other networks while www is the system that enables people to
access information over the internet. Internet refers to the hardware aspect (because it relates to computer networks,
connections and infrastructures) while www refers to the software aspect (as it relates to the Protocols or HTTP
(HyperText Transfer Protocol.)

*** *** HTTP are the system or procedures that enables the transfer of information in the internet (web services,
applications and platforms).

The World Wide Web (WWW)

The World Wide Web (abbreviated WWW or the Web) is an information space where documents and other web
resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), interlinked by hypertext links, and can be accessed via
the Internet.

What is a website?

A website is a collection of web pages and related content that is identified by a common domain name and published
on at least one web server.

Parts of URL

Two types of website

1. Static Web page has content that the user cannot manipulate
2. Dynamic Web Page a page where its contents depend on the user or the website visitor. Web pages that are affected
by user input or preference.

Web Versions

1. The versions of the web are categorized based on functionality and features that it represents. The three
distinctive web versions are:

 Web 1.0 (1994)

 Web 2.0 (2004)
 Web 3.0 (2021)

Web 1.0 is the First version of web technology. It is characterized for being Static (also known as flat page or stationary
page) in the same that the page “as is” and CANNOT BE MANIPULATED by the user.

Web 2.0 is “Read-Write”, which refers for the ability of the user to add content thru posting, sharing, commenting or
rating. Web 2.0 allows interaction not only in between the user and the creator but also to other users. Examples are
sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Reddit.

Key Features of web 2.0

1. Folksonomy – allows users to categorize and classify/arrange information using freely chosen keywords (e.g. tagging).
2. Rich User Interface – content is dynamic and is responsive to user’s input.
3. User Participation – the owner of website is not the only one who is able to put content.
4. Long Tail – SERVICES are offered on demand rather than on a one-time purchase. (Example: Netflix subscription)
5. Mass Participation – diverse information sharing through universal web access.
6. Software as a Service (SaaS) – users will subscribe to a SOFTWARE only when needed rather than purchasing them.

Web 3.0 is the concept of the next generation of the web, in which most users will be connected via a decentralized
network and have access to their own data. The keyword for Web 3.0 is “Executable”, which refers to the capability of
accepting a request from the user will execute a solution or suggestion considering the behavioral data the user.
