“The Third Level” Project

We read about Charley’s travels from the present to 1894 in Jack Finney’s
story “The Third Level.” Now, you are going to create a project that
includes narrative writing to describe the chain of events that happened to
Charley, starting when he walked into Grand Central Station.

DUE DATES
 Your rough draft will be due Thursday, April 18.
 Your final project will be due Wednesday, April 24.

ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW: (All projects must meet these requirements!)


 You will choose one of the project choices that includes at least EIGHT narrative paragraphs from a
character’s perspective or characters’ perspectives that chronicle what happened in “The Third Level.”

 Each narrative paragraph must be AT LEAST FIVE sentences long.

 You also must have at least one colored image that is relevant to the story for EACH NARRATIVE
PARAGRAPH to describe other things that happened along the way. They can be hand drawn or computer
generated. You will have at least eight images, at least one for each narrative paragraph.

 Try to be as CREATIVE as you can be! All projects will be unique, as each student is unlike any other.

GRADING:
 This project will not be judged on your artistic ability.
 It will be judged on your:
o Effort
o Creativity
o Quality of writing
o Attention to correct detail (as noted on this project sheet and on your grading rubric).

PROJECT CHOICES: (Choose ONE!)
1. A journal
 You can write the journal entries from the perspective of one character:
Charley, Louisa OR Sam
 Each entry needs to include at least one colored image that is
relevant to the entry. (mentioned above in the assignment overview)

2. A video journal
 You can create a video journal of the eight (or more!) entries from the
perspective of one character: Charley, Louisa OR Sam
 You don’t need to include images per se, but you do need to
include some props!

3. A PowerPoint
 You can create a PowerPoint presentation of the eight (or more!)
journal entries from the perspective of one character:
Charley, Louisa OR Sam
 Images can be included on each slide or on separate slides

4. An investigation case file


 You can create an “investigation case file” that include at least eight interviews from Charley, Louisa
and/or Sam that relate to eight events from the story
 You need to include at least eight interviews in your case file with one
at least one piece of photographic evidence (image) for each interview
 You need to include images of your evidence

5. If you have another idea, you may pitch it to Mrs. Pile


 Your project idea must be able to include at least eight pieces of
narrative writing (something from the perspective of a character or
characters in the story). Each narrative writing entry must be at least
five sentences. It must also include at least eight images/items that
relate to the story.
