Leadership as defined by John Maxwell as “the one who knows the

way, goes the way, and shows the way.” It is critical to understand what
makes a good leader. Not only should we consider their ideology, but we
should also consider their character. Certain characteristics can influence the
type of leader a person becomes. Dependability is one of the most crucial
characteristics of a good leader. Being a leader entails a great deal of
responsibility, and others rely on you to fulfill obligations. I believe that a good
leader, possesses the attributes of integrity and honesty, because leaders
succeed if they stick to their values and core beliefs. One has to have the
courage to be able to take risks, have respect for others, to create trust and
improve effectiveness, and a creative thinker, to be able to come up with
unique ideas and eventually turn those ideas into goals and into reality. As a
leader, one should also think positive, and it should be visible through one’s
actions. Staying calm under pressure and keep the motivation level high.
Being a leader often involves difficult decisions, but it is one’s job to make
such decisions. If people know they can count on you to help them through
not just the good times, but also the bad, then that's a positive sign. As John
Quincy Adams said “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more,
do more and become more, you are a leader.”
2. Leadership is earned, make your subordinates feel that they work with
you, and not for you. It is an influence, not an authority. To continue to grow
and develop as a leader in the organization, I must first be knowledgeable
enough on how to be an efficient and effective leader to my subordinates. As
a Nurse Corps officer I must demonstrate leadership in clinical variety, and
long-term performance. I believe that a person who is equipped with a great
foundation of knowledge can execute the desired action well. Knowledge has
to be improved, challenged, and increase constantly, or it vanishes. Next is to
have an enough experience, it is our greatest teacher as it provides hands-on
practice that would allow us to grow and enhance our skills and attitudes.
Continued practice is a must because it contributes to our decision-making
skills as it exposes us to situations where critical thinking is needed.
