An Essay about Alana Fawcett’s Anti-Social Networking

It is said that social media is made to promote socialization among people around

the world regardless of race, tradition, and culture. But is this really the face of social

media in today’s generation? For Alana Fawcett, social media is not boosting its main

objective to advocate or boost social behavior, instead, she witnesses patterns of

withdrawal from in-person connections. Nevertheless, netizens must be aware of this

issue and start appreciating the outside world of the internet again.

Social networking sites help people to connect with others from different parts of

the globe. However, Fawcett believed that social media is not used according to its

purpose, which is to create a bond among people. She presented data showing the rate

of adults using social media in the year 2014. Instead of linking people, social media

seemed to be the hindrance for its main goal. An inserted quote justified that social

media is fostering disentanglement.

When people are already in the stage of disconnection, self-absorption enters the

conversation. Therefore, how come we can say that social media is for socialization?

Since people are slowly becoming more narcissistic and self-centered, this entails

emptiness. Most people, especially the youth, feel unmotivated since their only focus is

theirselves.

As the number of people spending more time on social networking sites

increases, it's more likely to have a higher number of people suffering depression. This

was justified by the given rate of population depicting that almost a quarter of the whole
Facebook users are displaying the said mental health issue. Thus, this gives a conclusion

that social media does not always work in establishing relationships.

Using social networking sites entails a great responsibility which every user must

be aware of. People should make use of it upholding its primary intention - establishing

connection and not detachment.
