Business ethics is the study of appropriate business policies and practices regarding potentially
controversial subjects including corporate governance, insider trading, bribery, discrimination,
corporate social responsibility, and fiduciary responsibilities. The law often guides business
ethics, but at other times business ethics provide a basic guideline that businesses can choose to
follow to gain public approval.
Business ethics is a broad field because there are so many different topics that fall under its
umbrella. It can be studied from a variety of different angles, whether it's philosophically,
scientifically, or legally. However, the law plays the biggest role in influencing business ethics by
far. Many businesses leverage business ethics not only to remain clean from a legal perspective,
but also to boost their public image. It instills and ensures trust between consumers and the
businesses that serve them. The modern idea of business ethics as a field is relatively new, but
how to ethically conduct business has been widely debated since bartering and trading first
arose. Aristotle even proposed a few of his own ideas about business ethics
Ethical issues occur when a given decision, scenario or activity creates a conflict with a society’s
moral principles. Both individuals and businesses can be involved in these conflicts, since any of
their activities might be put to question from an ethical standpoint. Individuals are subject to
these issues in their relationships with other individuals or in their relationships with
organizations and same goes for organizations.
These conflicts are sometimes legally dangerous, since some of the alternatives to solve the issue
might breach a particular law. In other occasions, the issue might not have legal consequences
but it might generate a negative reaction from third parties. Ethical issues are challenging
because they are difficult to deal with if no guidelines or precedents are known. For this reason,
many professional and industry associations have ethical codes that are discussed and approved
by key participants to provide a useful framework for companies and individuals to make
adequate decisions whenever they face one of these conflicts. Ethical issues in business affect a
variety of aspects related to a business’s general operating standards. Establishing a code of
ethics for your business to operate by will help you lay a firm foundation of basic trust between
you and your employees, clients, partners, suppliers, and so on. Fortunately, the law often gives
the answers to questions related to ethical issues in business (we’ll touch on some examples later
on), but that’s not always the case. That’s why every business owner should familiarize
themselves with what ethical problems in business are, why they matter, and how they should
be addressed

Discrimination” means being treated differently or unfairly. Discrimination in employment is illegal when
the treatment is based on a personal characteristic or status, such as sex or race, which is protected
under anti-discrimination laws. Since the law prohibits discrimination based only on certain protected
categories, not every form of discriminatory or unfair treatment is illegal. . Discrimination can be
expressed through “harassment,” when a boss, supervisor, or co-worker says or does something that
creates an intimidating, hostile or threatening work environment. Harassment is illegal if it is based on a
personal characteristic or status protected under anti-discrimination laws. To be illegal, the harassment
must be so “severe or pervasive” that it interferes with the employee’s ability to perform the job.
Several federal and state laws protect people against many types of discrimination in employment.
Unethical accounting:
Unethical accounting practices are usually motivated by management pressure, bonus incentives, greed,
and more. However, these actions typically result in short-term gains, but long-term negative
consequences. There are many recipes for unethical behavior, and they all include a variety of
ingredients.
Nepotism is a form of favoritism which is granted to relatives in various fields, including business,
politics, entertainment, sports, religion and other activities. The term originated with the assignment of
nephews to important positions by Catholic popes and bishops. Nepotism has been criticized since the
ancient times by several philosophers, including Aristotle, Valluvar, and Confucius. For instance, the
ancient Indian philosopher Valluvar condemned nepotism as both evil and unwise.
Abuse of power or power harassment is the misuse of authority to take actions in personal interest that
negatively impacts the company and its employees. It's a relative form of workplace bullying but
specifically conducted by a superior.
Corporate Espionage:
Corporate Espionage is the unlawful theft/acquisition of intellectual property, such as key trade secret
and patent information as well as industrial manufacturing techniques and processes, ideas and
formulas.
Similar to a verbal rant, a social media rant is essentially uncensored wrath often through platforms such
as Instagram stories, tweets or Facebook posts.
Chapter-04
Workplace ethics is important as it enables management to treat all employees as equal and think from
their perspective as well. Employees must have a say in their appraisal system. ... Management needs to
make employees feel secure about their job and career. Unnecessary favoritism is against workplace
ethics.
By building an informed workforce, your employees will feel a stronger sense of connection to your
company, which means they'll stay longer. Having a strong internal communication strategy is key. Think
about it this way. If you don't know much about a topic, it's hard for you to understand or be interested
in it.
Let employees know how they should act before you can reward them for their behavior. ...
Acknowledge employees for their ethical behavior in a meeting or at lunch in front of other employees if
it is appropriate to do it publicly. Develop an incentive program for all eligible employees.
Recommendation
Conclusion
The main objective of business is to serve people with their every need for the well-being of human
being and to ensure that, there is no alternative of following business ethics. Since the practice of
business ethics in our country is still not ubiquitous, we are not getting the proper environment for
the business, and thus often we are facing some crisis situation audit is hampering our total
economic development. Our policy makers and the top executives of the organizations should give
more concern in making ethical policies and take proper steps to encourage business executives and
service holders to follow them.
