How were they

able to overcome it?

Akunna, a young woman who wins the visa lottery and comes to the United States. She thinks
everyone in America has a big house, a car, and a gun. Her relatives ask her to send her things
from America. Akunna goes to Maine to live with an uncle, who gets her a job and registers her
for classes at the community college. He says America is give and take. People make sacrifices,
as he does, being the only black employee at a company that wants to appear diverse. His wife
has to drive far to find someone who will style African hair, but it's a good trade-off. Akunna
feels comfortable at his home with his wife and daughters, who speak Igbo and eat Nigerian
food. People at college ask silly questions about Africa and about Akunna's hair.
One night, her uncle, who isn't a blood relative, tries to force himself on her. When she pushes
him away, he says he will do things for her if she allows him. All woman did it. The next day, she
leaves, ending up in Connecticut where she gets a job at a restaurant. The manager, Juan, pays
her a dollar less than the others, but he pays under the table. He says immigrants work hard.
She can't go to school because she has to pay rent, and college costs too much. She reads the
syllabi for classes online and reads some of the books. She thinks of her aunts, uncles, friends,
and her mother, whose salary was barely enough to pay her brothers' school fees. Yet she
sometimes bribed teachers for good grades, putting money in brown envelopes. Akunna never
needed a bribe, but she sends half her money home in similar plain brown envelopes. She
doesn't write a letter, for she has nothing to write about.

2. Choose one of the poems and describe the speaker. what are his sentiments?

The poem entitled “Once Upon a Time” talks about the people of how their generation differ of
how they were when they are still young. The sentiments of the speaker are that before, there is
genuineness in the laughers and greetings of every people, they are joy in every occasion and
meetings. The speaker said that there is really a big difference upon growing up. The genuine
laughers of the children were envied by the older ones for they have never really experience the
same feeling for there is much competition between the older individuals. The speaker misses
how to be a child who speaks for him/herself, the happiness and the bonding of the childhood
were only memories that are kept.
