Test I Easy Round

Problem 1
The standard deviation of scores in a Statistics examination is 10. However, since the
exam was very difficult, the Statistics teacher later decided to give an automatic bonus of
5 points to all the students. What is the standard deviation of the new scores?

Problem 2
Suppose the weights of male adults are known to have a normal distribution with mean
70 kg and standard deviation 12 kg.
a. What is the population of interest in this problem?
b. Suppose we are to take a random sample of 10 adults from this population.
Explain why we can safely ignore the finite population correction factor in our
calculation of the standard deviation of the sample mean, even if the population is
finite.
c. Calculate the expected value and the standard error for the mean of the above
sample of 10.
d. An old elevator has a posted carrying capacity of 750 kg. If ten randomly selected
adults from this population enter the elevator, what is the probability that their
total weights exceed the elevator's capacity?
e. If the distribution of weights was not normal, would the expected value and the
standard error in part (c) be still valid? How about the probability in part (d),
would it still be approximately correct?  Explain your answer.

Test II Medium and Difficult Round

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Use the six steps in hypothesis testing..

Problem 3
Windowless School with
A Psychologist wants to evaluate whether
Schools windows
windowless schools lead to anxiety in the
psychological development of children. A Mean 94 90
sample of children who are in windowless Std Deviation 8 10
classroom is selected and given an anxiety Sample Size 100 80
test. The same procedure is followed for children in classrooms with windows. Use the six
steps to evaluate such study.

scores are published by the College

Entrance Examination Board. SAT scores
for randomly selected students from each 586 457 506 440
of four high school rank categories are 680 521 556 495
displayed in the following table. Test 718 370 413 321
whether the scores significantly differ and 532 470 424
use t test to find which group most 330
probably be accepted first.

Problem 5
(PSA) Thirty consumers were selected to test a new home gardening tool. After using the
tool, each one was asked what would be a reasonable price for the tool. The replies (in
pesos) were:
175 180 230 360 320 210 250 160 310 300 410 270 290 400 380
150 180 250 375 310 230 220 180 350 310 420 300 275 430 390
Test the hypothesis that the random sample came from a normal population by first
constructing a frequency distribution for the data.
