PREFACE

This Self-Learning Kit (SLK) will help you understand and deepen your knowledge

on Learning Outcome 3 which is about setting the router, Wireless Technology which is

commonly known as Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) , Wireless Access Point, Repeater configuration.

Networking is a part of Computer System Servicing. It is used to be able to share

resources from one computer to another and to the other networks. To achieve the

Learning outcome stated above, this SLK mainly focuses on the configuration of networks.

Before you begin, you should remember that in order to attain the objective of this

SLK, keep this material neat, clean and in good condition all the time, do not write anything

on the pages of this material, read and understand with comprehension all the concepts of

this material, work diligently and honestly as you go through every activity in this material.

OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, with at least 80% level of proficiency, you should be able to:

1. identify the Wi-Fi, router, wireless access point as components in networking;

2. evaluate the functions of each component on networking; and
3. demonstrate the different component on networking such as Wi-Fi, router and wireless
access point by illustrating simple networking design.

LEARNING COMPETENCIES

1. Learning Outcome 3: Set the router / Wi-Fi / wireless access point/ repeater
configuration that includes the topic sub of 3.1 Configure client device systems
settings in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and end user preference.

2. Familiarize oneself with the router / Wi-Fi / wireless access point/ repeater
configuration. TLE_IACSSS9-12SUCN-If-j-IIa-e-35.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?

NETWORK means a system that transmit data between users, sharing of files and
exchanging.

INTERNET means interconnection of networks.

When you are at home and you need to talk to your friends, you need to use your
phone and connect to a network in order to communicate with them. But how does
networking works? What devices are needed in order to connect to the internet?

Wi-Fi is a freedom – freedom from wires. It allows you to connect to the internet from
just about anywhere – a coffee shop, a hotel room, or a conference room at work on your
own home. And to connect all over the world. It is easy to exchange information to and
fro.

Wi-Fi (WIRELESS FIDELITY)

It is a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide
wireless high-speed internet and network connections. It allows electronic
gadgets such as computers, mobile phones, smart TV’s, video recorder, Bluetooth
printer and other smart gadgets. To exchange, share, upload, download
information with another electronic gadget to the same network or other networks or to
the internet.

The following are the advantages of the Wi-Fi:

1. Convenience – the wireless nature of such networks allow users to access

network resources from nearly any convenient location within their primary
networking environment
2. Mobility – with the emergence of public wireless networks, users can access the
internet even outside their normal work environment
3. Productivity – users connected to a wireless network can maintain a nearly constant
with their desired network as they move from place to place
4. Expandability – wireless networks can serve a suddenly increased number of
clients with the existing equipment.
7
Self-Learning Kit in Information and Communications Technology

The following are the disadvantages of the Wi-Fi:

1. Security – To combat this consideration, wireless networks may choose to utilize

some of the various encryption technologies available.
2. Range - While sufficient for a larger typical home, it will be insufficient in a larger
structure.
3. Speed – The speed of most wireless networks (typically 1-54 Mbps) is far slower than
even the slowest common wired networks (100Mbps up to several Gbps).

Wi-Fi is the wireless technology that all internet-enabled devise use to get online
without messing around with cables.

CLIENT - A desktop computer, laptop, smartphones or tablet as well as any other

electronic devices that sends or receives data from a server. It is the user that
connects to a server within a network.

END USER PREFERENCE – The end user is the person who uses the software or
hardware after it has been fully developed, marketed
and installed. It is how they understands certain
software and electronic gadgets on how to use it.

ACCESS POINT
This is a base station in a wireless LAN. Although there are other wireless
technologies that use access points, the term generally refers to a Wi-Fi network. Access
Points (AP) can be stand-alone devices that plug into a router or switch; however, access
point functionality is also built into a wireless router, which is widely used
in most homes and small offices.

Access Point connects users to other users within the network and also can serve as
the point of interconnection between the WLAN and a fixed wire network. Each access
point serves multiple users and as people move beyond the range of one access point,
they are automatically handed over to the next one.

The DAP (D Link Access Point) can be configured to operate in seven different
modes as needed. The Access Point mode allows the device to act as a central hub for
wireless users. The wireless Client mode is available to enable the DAP to connect to another
Access Point.

The steps in configuring the Access Point is as the same as configuring the router.

First Step is to locate its IP address in the back.

TIPS to remember :

Use your web browser to

REPEATER
It connects two or more cable and retransmits any incoming signal to all other
Ethernet, cable wires. When a repeater retransmit a signal along more than one
additional cable segments – (or the electronic medium to transfer the signals)
called multiport repeater. For instance, one repeater may have ports for two to eight
additional cable segments.

The primary advantage of using a wireless repeater is that it can improve wireless
signal strength without having to move a computer or router. The further a computer is from
the wireless router it connects to, the weaker its wireless signal will tend to be.

Repeater extends the range of your Wi-Fi network to hard to reach areas inside or
around your home where you can’t get a Wi-Fi signal. It also delivers Wi-Fi speeds up to
300mbps. Here are the steps for repeater

Step 1: Select the Wireless Mode upong selecting the Wireless Mode select the Repeater
Mode.

Step 2: Plug in the extender . Step 3: Initiate the Wireless Setup.

Self-Learning Kit in Information and Communications Technology
Networks are more than communications cable, radio waves and interfaces.

They are shaped into a functional topology by a rich variety of network transmission
equipment. Without specialized transmission equipment, LANs would be limited to just a
few nodes, and WANs would be virtually nonexistent. Network transmission devices are
often hidden in wiring closets or in computer machine rooms, but they perform a vital role
in making sure that the e-mail goes to the right place, that a critical database can be
accessed from another office or that a file is successfully transmitted into another country.
Computer networks touch our lives in ways that sometimes mundane
sometimes dramatic. Every day they enable us to exchange e-mail, learn
about the latest news download software and participate in electronic
commerce. More dramatically, they are used to locate organs for surgery, provide
information on road conditions during storms and immediately transport vital documents.

As we go through our everyday lives, gadgets such as smart phones, laptops, desktop
computers, smart TVs, and any other gadgets make our life easier and comfortable. These
gadgets are enhancing as they are used to communicate with other in the same area or
different area. Networking is vital to our communication as it is used to exchange informa-
tion thru other networks or to the internet. The internet is one of the greatest creations
and gives everyone in the world with instant access to an endless supply of knowledge and
entertainment. The internet is the perfect place to work with other people from around the
world. There are dozens of online services that allow you to work with other people and with
the ability to have instant communication, it can even produce new products and services
faster.
