I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
a. explain how covalent bonding takes place
b. illustrate the sharing of electrons
c. give the importance of covalent bonding in our lives.

The teacher will call random students to illustrate the formation of ionic
bonding of the following:
1. MgO
2. CaCl

C. Motivation
The students will watch an animated video about covalent bonding and
answer the following questions:
1. What is covalent bonding?
2. How do this bond forms?

D. Presentation
Conduct an unlocking of difficulties and pre-activity.
1. Covalent bonding –the sharing of electrons between atoms. There
are two types of covalent bond: the polar covalent bond and the
nonpolar covalent bond.
2. Polar covalent pond – type of chemical bond where a pair of
electrons is unequally shared between two atoms
3. Nonpolar covalent bond - a type of bond that occurs when two
atoms share a pair of electrons with each other

E. Activity (Quiz Bowl)


The teacher will conduct a quiz bowl. The teacher will group the
students and each group must have three members. Each group will
be given an illustration board, a chalk and fact sheets. In this activity,
every group must illustrate the covalent bond given to them and they
will identify what type of covalent bond they are.

F. Analysis
1. What is covalent bonding?
2. How to identify the type of covalent bonding?
3. What is the difference between polar and nonpolar covalent
bonding?

G. Abstraction
1. Covalent bonding occurs between two nonmetallic elements. When
two or more nonmetallic combine in a covalent bonding, a molecule
is formed. Examples are the carbohydrates, proteins, fats, DNA and
synthetic fibers.
2. Nonpolar covalent bonds are a type of bond that occurs when two
atoms share a pair of electrons with each other.
3. Polar covalent bond - the electrons are not equally shared.
4. If the electronegativity difference is equal to 0.4 or less, it results to
a nonpolar covalent bond. If the electronegativity difference is less
than 1.9 and more than 0.4, polar covalent bond is formed.
A. Get the total available valence electrons in a compound.
Example: CO2
carbon atom has 4 valence electrons
oxygen atom has 6 valence electrons
Total Available Valence Electron (TAVE) = (1 C atom x 4) + (2 O atoms x 6)
= 4 + 12
= 16
B. Compute for the Octet Rule requirement that each atom should
have 8 valence electrons to become stable.
Number of Electrons based on Octet Rule = (1 C atom x 8) + (2 O atoms x 8)
= 8 + 16
= 24
C. Subtract a from b, then divide the difference by 2 because a
pair of shared electrons is equal to 1 bond. The quotient will
give you the number of bonds around the central atom.
Number of bonds = (24 – 16)

=4
Thus, there will be 4 bonds surrounding a carbon atom as shown in the
Lewis structure:
