More on Area

Now it’s time for some practice.

In each exercise, when it asks you to “solve” the triangle, find the missing parts (sides and
angles) and find the area. Find all values to the nearest 100th.

1. Solve the triangle ΔGHJ given ∠G = 38°, g = 14, j = 11.

2. Solve the triangle ΔXYZ given ∠Y = 62°, x = 132, z = 87.

3. From a fire tower 42 ft high, a forest ranger spots a moose. The angle of depression to the
animal is 8°. How far is the moose from the base of the tower?

7. Suppose a triangle has two sides with lengths 5 and 8 and included angle q. Express the
area of the triangle as a function of q. State the domain and range of this function.
For what value of q is this function a maximum?
