PHENOMENOLOGY

PHENOMENOLOGY
THE LIVED EXPERIENCE
What is phenomenology

 Derived from the Greek word phainomenon,

which means “that which appears,” it is about
perceiving and analyzing an observable
occurrence.

 “from the point of view of people.”

This explains why the emphasis is on specific
individuals or groups of people—they are actors
and performers of a certain event or social
engagement
“We can only know what we
experience."

HUSSERL (1962)
Phenomenology

-DESCRIPTION of our EXPERIENCES

-It stresses that only those that have
experienced phenomena can communicate
them to the outside world.
-It therefore provides an understanding of an
experience from those who have lived it.
This state of so-called “practical
consciousness,” of not having to question
why they do this or that because they are so
used to it, becomes their “lifeworld” where
many things transpire involving how people
deal with others and with the world.
Edmund Husserl

 Transcendental Phenomenology
“transcend” is the experience to discover the
meaning
 Consciousness and the objects of
consciousness are to be studied precisely as
they happen and experienced by an
individual.
 Analyze phenomena as we experience them
in our intentional consciousness
Phenomenology is about grounding
our world in an understanding of
consciousness, experience and the
lifeworld.
Hermeneutic phenomenology

Hermeneutic phenomenology
aims to interpret experience.
How do you apply Phenomenology to your study?

1. Figure out what

phenomenon/experience you want to
know more about.
2. Find people who have lived through
that experience
e.g. What it is like to be a doctor of
cancer patients?
