NOTES FROM THE COMPOSER
While working in Mexico, I had the opportunity to work with young children from
economically challenged areas. The children from one particular school program were
part of a Foundation for Small Voices songwriting workshop. The children spoke little
English, but were easily reached through music and rhythm. When I asked them if they had
a message that they would want to share with the world, one young girl said that she wished
adults would pay more attention to young people, and when I asked her what she would
say to adults, she simply called out: “Oye!” ...and the song was born. Even though the text
found in the verses feels sad, the children wanted the song to be up-tempo, celebratory, and
joyful, in the spirit of asking the world to listen up, and take notice.
When I hear this song performed, I am transported back to the streets where these children
walk, go to school, live with little, and dream; they dream that somehow, somewhere, their
small voices will be heard. For these children, I remain an ardent listener.
TRANSLATION
Esta solo, llorando All alone, in the darkness
en silencio, en la oscuridad They are crying out for your help.

con esperanza, por la oportunidad. They are asking for a chance to be heard.

Jim Papoulis has a distinctive musical style that combines contemporary sounds with musical
traditions from around the globe. Traveling worldwide, Papoulis works with international artists
and ensembles in order to explore and create a sound for a global community. This multi-
cultural sound has become the cornerstone of his works for choirs, orchestras, and ensembles.
Everywhere Papoulis travels, he actively immerses himself in the local music, instruments,
and culture, gaining the ability to incorporate these diverse elements gracefully into his
work. His choral compositions often seem to reflect the personal, inner perspectives of
those who sing them, enabling his music to create a bridge of honest feeling and inspiration
between singer and listener.
