Chamber Music Literature and Repertoire 2 Final

notes from class. Please use your own words for all answers and write at least one full
paragraph in each response. Good luck!

1.) Please define both Dadaism and Surrealism. Describe the differences between the
two. Hint: Surrealism is inspired by Dadaism. (5 points)
2.) Describe the first movement of both Ravel and Faure’s music. You can listen to
both Faure's and Ravel's piano trios below. You can also reference the article I
provided about Ravel by Arbie Orenstein and Faure’s slide. (10 points) Pay
attention to the textures of the two pieces.

4.) We discussed Alberto Ginastera, Joaquim Turina, Andriessen, and Pizzetti during
class. Please provide an overview of each composer's biography and their
Chamber Music with Piano. (10 points)
5.) Watch the Shostakovich documentary Close Up Shostakovich. Take note and write
his biography, including his childhood and how his musical concept developed.
Then, listen to his piano trio that I provided and write the details. (10 points)
6.) Compare Schönberg, Webern, and Berg’s Chamber Music with Piano we covered
in class. (10 points) Pay attention to their musical textures, and describe each
composer’s musical style.
7.) Watch Olivier Messiaen's Documentary that I provided. Please describe and write
down the details of the Quartet for the End of Time. (10 points)
8.) Which class was your favorite and why? Please be specific! (5 points)
