1. Observing- is a science process skill use in gathering information about object and events.
Observations are statements of what you see, taste, smell, hear and feel
Here are some examples in observing using your five senses:
Sight you can observe color, size and shape
Taste you can observe taste if it is sour, bitter, spicy, sweet, salty and pungent
Sense of smell- smell can Identify pleasant smell, it can be orange sent, lemon s sent. Or other sent that
pleasant to our smell and another one is unpleasant smell; it could be a dead animal or rotten food or
even the garbage odor
Sense of hearing- sense of hearing can identify a loud sound example are the bang of cannon or the
band of fireworks, the roar of the lions, the siren of the police car or the ambulance, the thunder storm
and etc. another one is the soft sound, it can be the hiss of snake, sound of rain drops, the ticking of the
wall clock or even your heart beat and etc.
Sense of touch- the sense of touch can Identify if it is smooth or rough, hard or soft, cold or hot, dry and
wet
There are two types of observation, first is the qualitative observations and quantitative observations,
when we say qualitative observations, they are made in using the senses, and they are descriptive
Example: look at the picture, that picture is a taro plant, now we will use our five senses in order to
describe this plant using the qualitative observations
The taro leaves are green
They are waxy and smooth
Quantitative: when we say observation involving numbers or quantitative tools like the balance, ruler,
meterstick and measuring cup are used in gathering quantitative observations.
Example: this picture is a hibiscus plant or gumamela plant
The flower of hibiscus plant has five petals
Each petal measures 9.2 centimeters in length
2. Measuring – use tools and instruments to find out how long, how heavy or how much
something is. Or shall we say measurement is a way of comparing things. It helps us gives
observations about the things around us.
You can gather quantitative observations about in material using tools:
- Distance or length is measured using a tape measure, meterstick, and ruler. Units like
millimeter, meter, or kilometer measure distance or length.
- Mass measures the amount of matter in an object using a balance. Milligram, gram, and
kilogram are units used to measure mass.
- Volume is the space an object occupies. Milliliter(mL) and liter (L) are units used to describe
volume of liquids while cubic centimeter (cm 3) or cubic meter (m3) are units used for volume of
solids.
- Temperature measures how hot or how cold an object is. Temperature can be measured using a
thermometer. The units to describe temperature are degree Celsius (°C), degree Fahrenheit
( °F), and kelvin (K).
- Time can be measured using clock or a calendar. The units for time are seconds (s),
minutes (min), days, months, and years.
3. Look at the shelfs of grocery goods in the picture, in which self would it be easier to find an item
that you are looking for, good in grocery stores, beans in dry goods stores and vegetable in the
market are sold separately, and in groups these materials are classified into groups. So, our next
science process skills is classifying.
4.
Classifying- Is the skill of grouping objects or phenomena according to common characteristics.
The reason for grouping things is known as criterion, things may be classified according to size,
weight, color, texture, shape, taste, use and other properties.
