TOPIC: What Are Senses and Other Tools
Lesson Vocabulary
 Sense
 Sight
 Balance
 Thermometer
Your senses
 How do you learn about things?
 You use your five senses.

 Your senses are the way you learn about the world.

 The senses are sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch

 You use different body parts for different senses

Learning with Your Senses

 Hearing : You listen to learn how things sound.

 Touching : You touch to learn about texture – how things feel

 Seeing : You use sight to observe color,

shape, and size.

Learning with Your Senses

 Smelling : You smell to learn how things smell.

 Tasting : You taste to learn if foods are sweet, sour or salty

Tools to Explore
 You can use science tools to learn more.

 People use science tools to find out about things

 A hand lens is a science tool.

It helps you see small things.

You can not see these things as well with just your eyes.
Measuring Tools

 Tape Rule : A tape measures around things.

 Ruler : A ruler measures how long things are.

 Measuring cup: A measuring cup measures liquid.

 Balance : A balance compares how heavy things are.

 Thermometer: A thermometer measures temperature. It tells how hot

and cold things are.
Skills to Help You Learn

 Observe and compare

 Predict and Measure

 Classify and Communicate

 Hypothesize and Plan an Investigation

 Infer and Draw Conclusions

Think Like a Scientist

 Scientists plan an investigation when they want to learn more.

 An investigation is a test scientist do.

 There are different plans for investigation.

 Here is one plan.

Observe
First, observe something. Ask a question about.

Hypothesize and Make Plan

Next, make a hypothesis. State something you can test. Plan a fair test
to see whether you are correct.

Do the Test
Do the test. Follow the steps of your plan what happens.
Draw Conclusion

Draw conclusions from your test. What did you learn? Compare your
with your classmates’ result.

Record What You Observe

Scientists record what they learn from an investigation. You can keep a
record in a science notebook. You can draw pictures and you can write
