- The Virgin Dolorosa of Mangatarem, which is located in a private residence, is a

significant Marian image. The villagers are said to have been shielded by the virgin
from the rigors of battle. Pregnant ladies borrow the Virgin's sash from time to time
and wear it during their last week of pregnancy to guarantee a safe delivery. People
used to pass the time before electricity by singing, telling stories, and engaging in
other simple activities. Folk songs were performed acapella or with the
accompaniment of stringed instruments such as the guitar, ukelele, bandurria,
octavina, and so on. Families would congregate around a papag (a low bamboo
table that doubled as a bed) beneath the moonlight to reminisce about times gone
by, from the Spanish era to the American era to the Japanese conflict. This session
frequently devolved into stories of both humorous and terrifying encounters with
ghosts and spirits.

have a stronger preference for Occidental products and values than for their own.
Their compositions mirrored the cultures they were familiar with. Bugtong

- Poetry and prose, as well as narrative and nonnarrative styles, are all used in Tausug
literature. The content of these forms falls into one of two categories: folk, which
is more closely tied to indigenous culture, or Islamic, which is based on the Quran
and the Prophet Muhammad's Hadith (sayings) and Sunna (traditions and
practices). Riddling is mostly used as a form of entertainment in Tausug society,
notably at weddings, wakes, and during Ramadan, when it becomes a battle of wits
and intelligence. It also has an educational purpose in that it teaches youngsters to
think about and be aware of nature and the objects in their environment.
