Introduction
“Dance is your pulse, your heart beat. It’s the rhythm of your life. It’s the
expression in time and movement, in happiness, joy, sadness and envy”
Course Content
The whole year round Philippine fiestas of all kinds mark the Filipino calendar. Not only popular
saints but also the most obscure ones are given a place for celebration. Why has this practice
been imbedded in the Filipino culture?
To appease the gods- this was a key factor in ancient pagan worship in the Philippines. Mystical
religious beliefs before the Spaniards came centered on worshipping gods believed to control
certain aspects of life- livelihood, family, health, wealth, and others. To make life better, the
belief said, regular ritual offerings to these gods had to be done. The gods seemed quickly
angered by the smallest mistakes and vented wrath on livelihood and nature. The practice was
somehow carried over into modern times so that one reason still used for Philippine fiestas is to
stave of calamities and ill luck, aside from thanksgiving for good and ill luck, aside from
thanksgiving for good harvest, and ask lots of wishes.
Fiestas are usually annual rites of celebrations with small town and rural flavours: streamers
and indigenous arches, the loud and discordant marching bands, the procession honouring the
patron saint, the feasting and bacchanalia. Unlike most other holidays that are family oriented,
the fiesta is community- oriented; one for which all stops are pulled. Despite late year’s loan
and expenses still unpaid and the coffers still empty, it is unthinkable not to lay out the
welcome- mat come fiesta day. A pig, cow, or carabao is sold, to ensure that all the friends and
neighbours may come and share in the merriment and festivity that last until the last morsel is
eaten or the last jigger of liquor is quaffed.
Fiestas are usually smaller in scale, celebrating a patron saint, a hero or a historical event. A
festival is more recent evolvement, denoting bigness and urbanity, with more elements of
organized commerce and a wider celebratory scope. Both offer opportunities to experience
something singularly Filipino, events usually detailed with religiosity and folklore and abounding
in that legendary Filipino hospitality.
The Philippines is rich with colourful festivals held all over the country all year round. Every
region reflects its culture with their fiestas and some provinces are known for festivals that
draw tourists and visitors every year. And , part of this traditions are the festival dances

HIP-HOP DANCE/
STREET DANCE
MODERN AND
CONTEMPORARY DANCE
“Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from
the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because of this development, hip- hop
dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.”
Hip- hop dancing is thought to have officially begun in New York City during the late 1960’s and
early 70’s. During this time, individuals without professional dance training but with a natural
instinct for movement brought dancing to the streets. A dance form meant to be popular in the
original sense of the world, meaning that it was for the people and not for the academy, hip-
hop moves were inspired by complex rhythms and the down-to-earth movement style of
African dancing. Music and movement came together to form a new art. While vestiges of
modern, tap, swing, and African dancing can all be found in hip- hop, this dance style is really in
a class of its own when it comes to improvisation and edge of competition.
The word ‘hip’ was used as African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as early as 1904. The
colloquial language meant “informed” or “ current,” and was likely derived from the earlier
form hep.
Hip- hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip- hop music or that have
evolved as part of hip- hop culture.
It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping which were created in
the 1970s and made popular by dance crew in the U.S.
Hip hop dance increases your stamina and endurance. It requires you to move and change positions
at an extremely fast pace. This constant motion helps build endurance and increases
your aerobic capacity.
Tones the Abdominals and Strengthens the Core
Hip hop requires you to contract and expand the abdominal muscles in a series of quick but fluid
movements. These motions work the upper and lower abs and the obliques and strengthen your
entire core.
Aids Weight Loss
Incorporating hip hop dance into your routine can help you manage your weight. Aerobic hip hop can
burn up to 500 calories per hour. Hip hop also boosts your metabolism, helping you to burn more
calories in less time.
Strengthens the Heart
Hip hop dance is a great cardio workout. Dancing on a regular basis can help you strengthen your
heart muscles, improve your lung function and boost your energy level. It can also reduce the risk of
heart disease and certain types of cancers. Intense cardio exercises, like hip hop dance, can
improve sleep patterns and provide relief from psychological stress.
Hip hop dance can be a great way to exercise while having fun. With a few simple steps you may
find yourself at an improved fitness level and in better shape.

MODERN
AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE
Around 1980s, the world “ contemporary dance” referred to the movement of new dancers
who did not want to follow strict classical ballet and lyrical dance forms, but instead wanted to
explore the area of revolutionary unconventional movements that were gathered from all
dance styles of the world.
Contemporary dances do not use fixed moves and instead try to develop totally new forms and
dynamics, such as quick oppositional moves, shifting alignments, expressions of raw emotions,
systematic breathing, dancing moves preformed in non- standing positions (for example lying
on the floor), and in general trying to find the absolute limits of our human form and physique.
The origins of this popular dance movement can be traced to several influential dance masters
such as Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham. They all wanted to show to
the world that contemporary dancers should embrace freedom, ignore old dance conventions
and explore the limits of the human body and visual expression of feelings. Also, one of the
precursors to the contemporary dance can be found in the millennia’s old techniques of Zen
Bhuddism and Indian Health Yoga, which incorporates various dancing philosophies that closely
follow the principles of contemporary dance.
If concern over lack of coordination is keeping you away from dance classes, trying some
Modern dance moves is a very good, safe place to start.
Modern dance moves are all designed to encourage freedom of movement and personal
interpretation while weaving in many varied and demanding steps and positions.
As there are many dances that you’ll do under the umbrella of contemporary dance that are
free flowing and aren’t a series of choreographed steps for you to remember, you’ll have
freedom to move the way you feel like moving.
Even though you may like to dance, you may not be very good at it. All it takes is a little time
and practice. The main question is: are you doing this to impress others, or is your heart in this?
Only when you know the answer for sure, will you be great.
1. Understand that when you dance lyrical, your movements show the words of the song.
This means that if the words were, “She falls like the petal drifting from its rose,” you
would gracefully sink to the floor and pretend to be the petal. Fluent is where you pour
your heart and feelings out with your movements. Let’s just say if you danced fluent to
the rose petal line, you would probably feel sad because “she is drifting”, so you would
show that with a sad, but graceful, drift away from the center.
2. Try to come up with lots of different feelings and moves. It would get very boring to
watch someone do the same movement over, and over, and over again.
3. Find a stage, an open place, such as a basement, or even outside in your front lawn ( if
you do this, make sure there is an outlet so you can plug in a CD player). The best places
are the ones with a large lengthy mirror on the wall.
4. Pick a song with deep meaning and flowing music, otherwise it gets a little harder to
stay fluent with your movements.
5. Listen to the song. You should listen to it maybe 2-3 times to get the feel of the words,
instruments, and the tempo.
6. Do your body a favour: before you dance, make sure you stretch. This is a key part in
getting better. You don’t want to pull a muscle and not be able to practice, so be sure to
stretch your arms, legs, neck, and maybe do some push- ups.
Remember: DO NOT DO CURL UPS BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO HARM YOUR
BACK!!!
7. Just let your body flow. This sometimes is a hard concept for some people to
understand. They like to jerk their limbs around like a monkey and just turn in circles.
When you dance fluently, like the water in the stream, you let your body pretend you
are trapped under the ocean. (Pretend you can still breathe) You would get bored just
standing there with nothing to do, so you start to flow. Your limbs are outstretch your
fingers and open your mind to more fluent movement. You touch the sky with every
reach and skim the ocean’s sandy floor while the sun rays dance around you. This is how
it feels to dance fluent. You move your arms and legs and head so they flow gracefully
together.

BALLROOM DANCE
“ Dancing has played an important role in the cultures of many societies throughout history.
Much of the history of ballroom dancing has involved social gatherings, dances and balls, at
which dancing was particularly important as a means of enabling young people to meet each
other, with the hope that they might meet their future husband or wife. Talking about the
timeless romance aspect associated with partner dancing! Ballroom dancing allowed couples to
spend some time in close proximity, while chaperoned.
The term “ballroom dancing” was originally applied to the dances commonly done in a
ballroom. The type of dance depended, of course, on the period under consideration. For
example, the eighteenth century was primarily the time of open couple dances, particularly the
slow and stately minuet.
In France, the minuet and other count dances were killed by the French Revolution. Even in
England, the minuet suffered a gradual decline by the end of eighteenth century.
The nineteenth century witnessed rapid changes in dancing styles. The minuet disappeared in
the early years of the century.
The dance moves in modern ballroom dancing have now been standardized, and presently, a
dancer needs to pass several levels to be considered a master of ballroom dance. This is
because ballroom dances are intricate, and they contain specific techniques, tempos,
vocabularies, and rhythms, which take time to learn. Although every ballroom dance style has
its own particular aesthetics and rhythms, they still have a commonality is that makes them
somewhat similar. One commonality is that they are all performed by a pair of dancers, and
they are danced in “closed hold”. In the closed hold dances, the couples are required to
maintain five areas of contact with each other, with the man’s left hand holding the woman’s
right hand, the woman’s left elbow resting on the man’s right elbow, the woman’s left hand on
the right upper arm of the man, the man’s right hand on the woman’s shoulder, and the right
parts of their chests touching.

___________3. Cuddle position is often assured in preparation for making a side step.
___________4. Left Outside Position is similar to the right position except that the woman is
placed to the man’s left side.
___________5. Right Outside Position, partners are facing each other about one step apart
with no contact. Arms are held at about shoulder height with palm down.
___________6. Open break position partners are about one step apart facing each other.

MODULE 5
CHEERDANCE
Cheerleading began during the late 18th century with the rebellion of male students. After
the American Revolutionary War, students experienced harsh treatment from teachers. In response
to faculty's abuse, college students violently acted out. The undergraduates began to riot, burn down
buildings located on their college campuses, and assault faculty members. As a more subtle way to
gain independence, however, students invented and organized their own extracurricular activities
outside their professors' control. This brought about American sports, beginning first with collegiate
teams.
In the 1860s, students from Great Britain began to cheer and chant in unison for their favorite
athletes at sporting events. Soon, that gesture of support crossed overseas to America.
On November 6, 1869, the United States witnessed its first intercollegiate football game. It took
place between Princeton University and Rutgers University, and marked the day the original "Sis
Boom Rah!" cheer was shouted out by student fans.
Today’s cheerleaders have come a long way from the pom-pom shaking, cartwheeling girls of
the 50’s. They perform outlandish stunts that can take days, or weeks, to perfect. The stunts
require physical strength, focus, and an enormous degree of trust on all ends. Common injuries
include plantar fasciitis, patellar tendonitis, ankle sprains, stress fractures, hip strains, and
inflammation around the hips. The most serious injuries typically are the results of stunting,
though some come from jumps and other tumbling.
6 BENEFITS OFCHEERLEADING
1. Physical Endurance
Cheerleading is a great cardio workout! Cheers typically only last a couple of minutes so
it is necessary to repeat high-energy routines. Choreography contains not only dance
but also tumbles, jumps and sometimes stunts, all which require great stamina
especially to maintain a big smile throughout the routine as well!
2. Strength Training
Cheerleading is a whole body workout. You will build strength by rehearsing weekly,
particularly in your lower body, shoulders and core.
3. Flexibility
Stretching exercises within each class will develop your flexibility, increasing your range
of movement. This will help improve your high kicks, jumps and tumbles within the
sequences.
4. Coordination
Coordination is a key element of cheerleading. You will improve your ability to learn
routines and perform them in time with your team mates.
Performing and practicing as part of a team is vital for cheerleading in order to complete
sequences in unison and support stunts and tumbles. It can also improve leadership
skills by building confidence to speak up for the good of the team.
Learning to listen to both team mates and the instructor is crucial for undertaking
tumbles and stunts safely. These are great transferable skills.
6. Positive Mood
Release those happy hormones! Exercising releases endorphins which will boost your
mood.
Cheerleading in particular is all about portraying a positive outlook with upbeat chants
and a huge smile which is sure to leave you in a good mood!
