BED SHAMPOO PROCEDURE

PROCEDURE
1. Explains the procedure to the patient.
2. Arranges the materials at the bedside.
3. Closes the windows and door.
4. Screens the bed PRN.
5. Lines the chair and floor with newspaper.
6. Prepares the water at desired temperature.
7. Loosens and folds the top sheet down to the waist line, or replaces with a bath blanket.
8. Removes the pillow and bring the patient’s head close to the edge of the bed by placing her diagonally
across the bed.
9. Lines the pillow with the rubber protector and bath towel and place it under the patient’s neck and
shoulder so that the head is slightly inclined.
10. Inserts the Kelly pad under the patient’s head with the trough directed towards the pail.
11. Combs the patient’s hair.
12. Covers the eyes with a folded face towel.
13. Plugs the ears with cotton balls.
14. Moistens hair thoroughly then pour soap solution or liquid shampoo slowly on the scalp and hair while the
other hand spread it.
15. Massages the scalp with the fingers using the ends or tips not the nails.
16. Rinses, repeat process until the hair is thoroughly cleansed, taking care to avoid frequent turning of the
head. Uses cold water for final rinse.
17. Squeezes off excess water from hair.
18. Removes the eye cover and earplug.
19. With one hand, raises the head while with the other, removes the Kelly pad and drop it to the pail.
20. Puts the bath towel under the head and readjust the pillow.
21. Dries the hair well then comb it.
22. Moves back the patient to the center of the bed, leaves the rubber protector until the hair is completely
dry.
23. Fixes the bed linen and make the patient comfortably.
24. Leaves the patient’s unit in order.
25. Discards soiled linen into the hamper.
26. Cleans used equipment and keeps them in their proper places.
27. Records time, reaction of the patient and any abnormality noted.
