Procedure

1. Explain the procedure to the patient and what she


can do to help herself

2 Provide privacy

3. Place equipment at convenient place

4. Move the head of the patient to the edge of the bed.


Inspect the hair and scalp prior to initiating the
procedure

5. Remove the pillow and place it under the shoulders to


hyperextend the neck

6 Tuck a bath towel around the client's shoulders.

7. Place the waterproof pad under the client's


shoulders, neck and head

8. Place the Kelly pad or plastic trough over the rubber


sheet and under the client's head and direct towards
the bucket or washbasin. Line the floor with newspaper

9. Place a damp cloth over client's eyes.

10. Place cotton balls in the client's ears if indicated.

11. Remove pins and ribbons from the hair and brush
and comb it to remove any tangles

12. Wet the hair thoroughly with warm water


13. Apply shampoo to the scalp. Make a good lather
while massaging the scalp with the pads of your
fingertips. Start at the hairline

14 Rinse the hair briefly, and apply shampoo again as


necessary

15 Rinse the hair and apply conditioner if requested

16 Rinse the hair thoroughly with cold water until hair is


free of soap

17. Squeeze water from hair.

18. Unpin towel and wrap around head

19. Raising patient's head, remove Kelly pad and place in


the bucket.

20. Return pillow under head. Dry client's hair and scalp.
Use second towel if first becomes saturated

21. Dry hair with the dryer (optional)

22. Comb hair to remove tangles.

23. Assist client to a comfortable position

24 Clean and keep equipment.

25. Document the shampoo and any assessments.
