Inspection
See Page 6 Paragraph 2
1. Locate the Nose Gear Acuator lugs on the aircraft. See Figures 1 and 2.
2. Relocate Actuator to allow access to Lugs.
Scan Sensitivity: Calibration sensitivity + 6dB Scan Index: Full coverage in both directions - both sides
Back Refection Monitoring: N/A
Instructions:
Remove paint from top of lugs (Fig. 3) Scan both the Lugs in both directions - both sides, with both transducers. See Figure 6.
After inspection is complete, clean scan area and re-apply paint.

Discontinuity Evaluation:
Instructions:

Evaluate any repeatable indication similar in appearance to the calibration notch exhibiting an amplitude over baseline noise.
See Page 7 Paragraph 2b and 2c.

Reporting
Instructions: Report any positive indications to Sikorsky Aircraft field representative and Customer Service before proceeding.

Surface Preparation.
1. Remove paint from the lugs in the scan area only (See Figure 3) using Paint
Stripper 6930 HV12UTC.107359, and Plastic Scraper STD-1753.007.

2. Coat the top of the lugs with the liquid stripper.

NOTE: Take care not to allow this liquid to run down the sides of the lugs.

3. The Stripper material must remain on the surface for ½ hour before removal.

4. Remove the Stripper material and using the plastic scraper, remove the paint from
the top of the lugs. See Figure 3.

5. Remove remaining Stripper and loose paint with a damp cloth.

1. Calibration

a. The Transducers are bi-angular. They produce a dual angle refracted

Longitudinal wave of approximately 12 degrees forward in the part with an
angle of approximately 15 degrees to the right or to the left, depending on the
wedge used. See Figure 4.

b. Ensure that the correct wedge is used to angle the sound field towards the
notch side in either direction. (Wedges are marked – R and L)

Figure 4

c. Place the Transducer on the Calibration Standard (EWR 95341-101) and locate
the EDM notch. See Figure 5.

UT 5077 Rev 0 Page 6 of 7

Figure 5

d. Set the Signal from the notch(s) at 80% Full Screen Height (FSH). Typical
presentation, see Figure 5.

e. Add 6 dB gain.

2. Inspection
a. Place the transducer on the part in the scan area and scan both lugs in both
directions with both transducers. See Figure 6.

NOTE: The scan is very sensitive to transducer angulation.

Standing signals will appear if the transducer is not in the correct orientation.

b. If suspect indications are visible, reduce the gain to the calibration sensitivity.
Rescan and evaluate the area of concern.

c. If the indication is verified as a discontinuity, remove the bushing from the

suspect lug, clean well and conduct a “Type 1 Method C Level 3” Penetrant
inspection of the lug bore.

d. If there are no suspect indications present, complete inspection as per

Paragraph 3, a. b. and c. below.

e. If any anomalies are present during the inspection, contact Customer Service
Engineering at 1-800-976-4337 prior to proceeding.

3. After Inspection:

a. Clean inspection area with acetone

b. Touch up inspection area with epoxy primer per MIL-P-85582.

One coat only. Do not prime bushings or holes.

c. After primer is dried (not tacky) and within 8 hours, touch up inspection area
with one coat of Mil-P-85285 exterior paint to match existing paint. Do not paint
bushings or holes.
