Sport is commonly defined as an athletic activity that involves a degree of competition, such
as netball or basketball. Some games and many kinds of racing are called sports. A professional
at a sport is called an athlete. Many people play sports with their friends.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF ENGAGING SPORTS?

1. Better Sleep
Fast Company suggests that exercise and sport triggers chemicals in the brain that can make you
feel happier and relaxed. Team sports provide a chance to unwind and take part in an activity that
improves your fitness. If you play sports outside, you can benefit from fresh air which is said to
promote a good night’s sleep.

2. A Strong Heart
Your heart is a muscle and needs frequent exercise to help it keep fit and healthy. A healthy heart
can pump blood efficiently around your body. Your heart will improve in performance when it is
regularly challenged with exercise. Stronger hearts can improve overall health of the body.

3. New Connections
Sport brings together a mixture of people from different communities, backgrounds, religions
and beliefs. Sport can offer a new way to meet others that you may not interact with day to day.
As a result, you can make new friends. And who knows, playing a sport might even open new
career and business opportunities for you.

4. Improved Lung Function

Regular sport causes more oxygen to be drawn into the body with carbon monoxide and waste
gases expelled. This increases the lung capacity during sport, improving lung function and
efficiency.
5. Increased Confidence
By training frequently and working towards seasonal goals you can build your confidence and
abilities. This is especially noticeable through tournaments and matches where you and your
team put your skills to the test. Small, incremental achievements throughout the year can build
personal confidence over time, giving you the ability to take on new projects and assignments at
work with your new-found confidence.

6. Reduces Stress
When you are physically active your mind gets a chance to unplug from daily stresses and strains
of life. Physical exercise reduces the stress hormones in your body and stimulates the release of
endorphins. These endorphins may give you more energy and focus for whatever life has.

7. Improve Mental Health

The Public Health Agency report that regular participation in sport and being active can also
promote good mental health. This includes improving your mood, enhancing your sense of well-
being, reducing anxiety, combating negative emotions and protecting against depression.

8. Sport Builds Leaders

All sport teams need leaders to show the way and help develop new or younger team members.
An emergentics study has found a correlation between playing sports and strong leadership
qualities. Sports enable people to develop a ‘team mindset’ whether its winning, losing or
training together.

9. Develop Stronger Relationships

Sports enables you to build better relationships with people you may be aware of, but not know
personally. Through frequent sport you can get to know a lot about an individual’s personality,
their strengths and weaknesses. Sport with colleagues is a good opportunity to build better
relationships and networks that may help you in your job.

10. Sport aids the healthy development of children

Children who play sports develop stronger bones and muscles, leading to a smaller chance of
physical injury. Physical exercise before the onset of puberty has been identified by a New
Zealand study as a way of reaching peak bone mass, enabling children to become stronger – a
great foundation for future growth.
Health

Sports and health are heavily connected. The stress caused by exercise on the bones, muscles,
ligaments, and tendons makes them strong and healthy. Exercise helps to burn calories in the
body reducing chances of obesity. Heart muscles performance and endurance improve,
increasing its efficiency and reducing the risk of heart diseases. Exercise triggers the use of
sugar in the blood. Glucose is converted into energy hence balancing the blood sugars. Sports
also help in the fight against cancer and other lifestyle diseases.

Self-confidence and self-esteem

That handshake after winning develops self-esteem. A word of encouragement and praise from
parents, friends, and coaches make a student feel accepted. A motivated student is more likely to
do well in class than a student who views everything to be against him or her.

Teamwork

Teamwork is key to success. In sports, you have to collaborate with other team members to win.
To succeed in education, a student needs to work hand in hand with teachers and fellow students.
After school when working on a project, those with teamwork skills achieve their objectives.
Employers are interested in hiring employees who can work together with other employees to
achieve a common goal. Teamwork skills are among other requirements to secure a good job.

Leadership

In sports, there is leadership. Becoming a captain gives a student skills on how to become a good
leader. On later life, he or she might develop an interest in politics and end up being a top leader.
Being a leader at school help a student gain interest and leadership skills. Many leaders have at
one point in their education participated in school leadership. Many top positions in companies
require someone with leadership skills.

Social Skills

Sports brings people together. Sports students have many friends. When playing in other schools,
they get a chance to interact with new people. Sports give students a chance to go to foreign
countries. When in a foreign country one can learn foreign languages. It helps build a sense of
belonging. These social and communication skills later help a student in future career and
relationships. One gets to know the importance of people around him at a younger age. Sports
students are not victims of tribalism and other discrimination. They appreciate the presence of
everyone in their life. This ability to live with anyone makes it easy for a person to survive in
foreign countries.
Discipline

Discipline is key to success in sports. In sports, a student has to follow the rules set and obey his
or her coach. While other students are idle thinking of drugs, a sports student is busy training, he
or she has no time for drugs. Coaches also educate them on the negative impacts of drugs in their
sports life. With discipline, a student can reach his or her goals. Time management skills are
learned in sports. When you are on tight schedules and have no time for assignments due to
sporting activities, you can check college essay writing service for assignment help.

Brainpower

Sports is the best in fighting stress. Sports help improve the cognitive and memory function of
the brain. After spending several hours in class, a student needs some time to refresh the mind.
Sports active students are top scholars in academics. Sports builds their ability to concentrate and
focus in class.

Career and passion

Some students are good at sporting. There is nothing as sweet as doing what you are talented. As
a footballer in school, you can have a passion of becoming a top athlete after which you can later
become a coach and train other people. One can also decide to venture into sports to become a
referee or a coach. Sports has many careers that need professionals.

Improved energy levels

Regular body exercise improves our energy levels. Sports students can be active throughout the
day without getting tired. Regular body exercise boosts the performance of the lungs. They are
able to absorb more oxygen into the body which is used in the generation of energy. Sports
students can perform tasks with fewer struggles. Athletes can walk for long distances as
compared to non-athletes.

Managing emotions

Emotions run high on sports. Sporting students can control their emotions. Coaches train
students how various negative emotions can affect their performance. Emotion management
skills learned at a young age helps one handle critical life challenges later on in life.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT NATURE OF SPORTS?

Sport is about a range of specific activities which involves competition and requires physical
conditioning and skills. A good way to define it would be to say, "It is a structured physical
activity, usually competitive, that requires complex skills and a high level of individual
commitment and motivation".

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL AND DUAL SPORTS?

Some sports are individual sports, where one athlete competes on his or her own merits.
Other sports are dual sports, which require two athletes to compete as a team to win together. ...
The main difference between individual and dual sports is the number of athletes who
compete on the same side

Individual Sports

Individual sports are those sports where only one athlete competes for his or her own side. Many

track and field, cross country, and swimming events are individual competitions, where one

athlete is solely responsible for winning or losing. Golf is another sport where each athlete is on

his or her own.

Skiing, snowboarding, and many other events you see in Olympic and other international

competitions are individual sports as well. Gymnastics is a sport where athletes compete on a

team but perform individually. Even basketball can be a one-on-one activity.

Dual Sports

There are only a handful of sports that are strictly dual sports and don’t have an option for

individual competition. At the Olympic level, beach volleyball involves two players per team. In

professional wrestling—which some would argue isn’t a sport—tag team matches involve two-

person teams where one competitor tags in or out of the match. You can play two-on-two

basketball as well.
Sports That Can Be Individual or Dual

There are certain sports that can be either individual or dual sports. The most common example

is tennis, where athletes can compete in singles or doubles play, and many competitors take part

in both at major tournaments. You can also play other racquet sports like badminton and

racquetball in either format.

Table tennis, or ping-pong, gives players options for playing as individuals or as duos. Billiards

offers two-on-two options as well.

Pros and Cons of Individual Sports

Individual sports can be fun because you’re solely responsible for the outcome. The performance

rests on your shoulders, and you receive all of the credit for your victory. Individual sports

require a competitive spirit and a self-starting nature. You’re on your own as an individual

athlete, so you have to compete without anyone beside you to take up the slack.

On the opposite side of the argument, if you lose, all of the blame falls on you as an individual

athlete. You also don’t have a teammate to lean on if you’re struggling or having a bad

performance. It’s easier to get discouraged when you’re the only athlete competing.

Pros and Cons of Dual Sports

Competing in dual sports can be fun because of the camaraderie and teamwork involved in

working together as a team. Dual teammates can encourage each other and play off each other to

win. One teammate can also bear the load when the other one is struggling or having difficulty.

Dual sports require cooperation, so if you get along well with your fellow athletes, you’ll do well

in a dual sport.

There are disadvantages to dual sports as well. You have less control over the outcome when

you’re relying on another teammate. You can have your best individual performance and still

lose the match or game in a dual sport, which is an important factor to remember. You can also
find the burden of a game or match falling on you if your teammate is performing poorly or has a

bad attitude.

Team Sports

The category of team sports is even more broad. The most popular sports at the college level—

sports like football, baseball, and basketball—are team sports. Teams play volleyball, hockey,

and lacrosse as well. Relays in swimming or track and field are team efforts. The dynamic of

team sports is even more different than individual or dual sports, because of the cooperation and

specialization of roles on teams.

Sometimes an individual or dual sport can cross over to being a team sport. In large international

competitions like the Olympics or the Davis Cup in tennis or Ryder Cup in golf, you can

compete as an individual or part of a duo, but you’re also competing for your country’s team as a

whole. In gymnastics, athletes compete in individual events, but the team as a whole receives a

score.
