SPECIFICATION

Electronic Personal Dosimeter (EPD) for ionizing Radiation Sources

1. Scope

This specification describes the requirements for an Electronic Personal Dosimeter

(hereinafter referred below as “the EPD”), to be used for the purpose of radiation
exposure monitoring. The EPD will be used by regulatory authority inspectors and
emergency workers, working in a proximity to ionising radiation and radioactive
sources.

2. Applicable Documents
The following documents shall be applicable for this Specification to the extent
specified hereinafter:
o IEC 61526:2010 “Radiation protection instrumentation - Measurement of
personal dose equivalents Hp(10) and Hp(0,07) for X, gamma, neutron and beta
radiations - Direct reading personal dose equivalent meters”
In the event of conflict between the documents listed above and the content of this
Specification, the content of this Specification shall take precedence to the extent of
the conflict.

3. Definitions, Acronyms and Abbreviations

No special definitions, acronyms of abbreviations apply beyond the commonly used
and understood in the field of the EPD application units and technical standards (see
IEC 61526:2010).

4. Requirements
4.1. Functional and Performance Requirements
The EPD shall meet the following functional and performance requirements:
4.1.1. Energy dependence and angular dependence as in IEC standard
61526:2010;
4.1.2. Alarms: at least one configurable alarm for dose and at least one for dose
rate. Alarm volume and visual indications as in IEC standard;
4.1.3. Saturation (doses over the maximum dose or dose rate range): clear
indication of "off-scale" and quick return after leaving radiation field, as in
IEC standard;
4.1.4. Include one (1) or two (2) AA batteries, with a battery life of minimum 30
days of continuous use, or 90 days switched off;
4.1.5. The power status shall be shown on display;
4.1.6. Dose display: direct readout of integrated dose Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) and
dose rate Hp(10)/h and Hp(0.07)/h;

4.1.7. Auto-ranging of the display;

4.1.8. Display: Sv units with backlight for night work;
4.1.9. Pulsed radiation measurement capability (X-ray). Acceptance criteria as
in IEC standards 61526:2010;
4.1.10. Radiation types detected: gamma and X-ray photons, neutrons and beta;
and
4.1.11. The EPD shall be pocket-sized, water resistant, and have a non-porous
casing that is easily to decontaminate.

4.2. Technical Requirements

The EPD shall meet the following technical requirements:
4.2.1. Dose range for Hp(10): 1 μSv - 5 Sv;
4.2.2. Dose range for Hp(0.07): 1 μSv - 10 Sv;
4.2.3. Dose rate range for Hp(10): 0.5 μSv/h to 1 Sv/h;
4.2.4. Dose rate range for Hp(0.07): 5 μSv/h to 1 Sv/h;
4.2.5. Energy range for photons: 20 keV to 7 MeV;
4.2.6. Energy range for neutrons as per IEC standard 61526:201;
4.2.7. Instrument weight: not exceeding 150 g (including battery and clip); and
4.2.8. Dimensions: not exceeding 60 x 35 x 80 mm

5. Marking
5.1. Name plates with the manufacturer’s name, model number, manufacturing
standard and fragility warnings shall be attached to the unit.

5.2. The EPD shall have all safety markings in English language.

6. Packing
The EPD, for the shipment by air to the End-User, shall be packed in accordance with
international standards that are applicable for the shipment by air of this kind of
equipment.

7. Quality Requirements
7.1. The EPD shall be manufactured, shipped and installed in accordance with the
Supplier’s ISO quality assurance system or an equivalent quality assurance
system.
7.2. The Supplier shall document the compliance with this quality assurance
system.
7.3. A manufacturer’s calibration certificate shall be provided, as applicable.

8. Testing and Acceptance

8.1 The EPD, prior to shipment, shall be tested for conformance of the system with
manufacturer’s performance specifications and the minimum requirements,
specified herein.
8.2 The results of the testing of the EPD shall be documented by the Supplier and
submitted to the End-User.

9. Deliverable Data Items

9.1 Additional feature: connection or communication to computer for downloading
information and dose rate profiling.
9.2 The Contractor shall provide two (2) complete sets of user, operation and
servicing manuals and technical drawings or illustrations in the English
language.
