Bio-Chem Project

Pasha Zulfugarli-10C4

Introduction to the experiment:

Plant leaves contain a variety of pigments. Through the wet, sunshine

months, chlorophyll turns them green and aids in photosynthesis. Other
pigments such as black, orange, and red become more obvious as fall
occurs and the green, food-making colours disappears. As long a leaf is
a combination of these pigments, paper chromatography can be used to
isolate the colors. The pigments are dissolved in this process, which
allowing them to be absorbed by a piece of paper. And at the end this
procedure identifies the pigments in a mixture by molecular size and
colour.

Materials:
1.Paper Towel
2.Alcohol (99%)
3.Colorful markers(for first semester experiment)
4.Hot water
5.Small pan
6.Small jar
7.Leaves with different colors(for the second semester experiment)
Procedure:
 Fill the jar with 6-7 leaves.
 Add alcohol into the jar and close lids
Put jar into the shallow pan and add hot water in it for 1 hour
 Alcohol picks up color from leaves
 Take long strip paper towel
 Place strip into the jar that one end inside the alcohol another
outside the jar
 Pigments separated along the paper
 After 1 hour take strips from the jar and let it to dry for 15
minutes

Result:
When we place jar of leaves into hot water, the leaves starts to color
alcohol. The color from alcohol immerse into the paper. The pigments
sink all over the paper
Conclusion:
When the colour of leave appear on paper towel, the pigment
dissolves. The reason is in the leaf different characteristics of the
pigments. Different colour leaves have different pigments, and
that’s why for each leave there is are different chromatography
