Quarter 1 – Module 1:
Introduction to Earth System
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Earth Science- Grade 11/12 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on Introduction to Earth System

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by

educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

Module on Introduction to Earth System!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action, and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create,
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies
and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning and
gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

4
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written to help you to be able to make a plan that
the community may use to conserve and protect its resources for future
generations. The learners will be able to:

1. Describe the characteristics of Earth that are necessary to support life.

(S11ES-Ia-b-3)

2. Explain that the Earth consists of four subsystems, across whose boundaries
matter and energy flow. (S11ES-Ia-b-4)

At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Describe how Earth characteristics necessary to support life.

2. Appreciate the Earth`s four subsystems and its importance to energy flow.

3. Make a concept map/ Radial Diagram and use it to explain how the
geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere are interconnected.

5
What I Know

Instruction:

1. Unscramble the letters to reveal the answer.

Answer

1 DNAL

2 ERTAW

3 RAI

4 IOBSHPERE

5 ITOLPSEHRE

6 TOMAPSHEER

7 SSYMET

2. Using your answers from number 1, connect those words from each other by
constructing an essay.

6
Lesson
Earth System
1

What are the four systems of the Earth? What makes Earth harbor life? Are

Lithosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere and Atmosphere were connected to each other?

The answer is Yes! Because Earth is the only planet in the solar system as of

now that we can live in. It provides water to drink and aquatic products (fish,

seashells, seaweeds), land to cultivate our foods, mountains that give us timber to

build shelter and air to breath in. In addition, Earth give us energy to use to live for

a long period of time. That is why Earth is a planet that is perfect to live in.

Did you know that our mother Earth have four major subsystems? It

composes of land, water, living things (bacteria, animals, plants, animals, and

humans) and air. These Earth subsystems are called spheres. To a more technical

term, these are the "lithosphere" (land), "hydrosphere" (water), "biosphere" (living

things), and "atmosphere" (air). Each of these spheres plays an important role. Each

of them has a significant role, they work by their assignment to perform and give us

sustainable energy (life).

7
What’s In

Instruction: Unscramble the letters to reveal the answer.

__________ 1. It is the most abundant system of Earth. (YHDORSEPHRE)

__________ 2. It is an example of living thing. (CABTEIRA)

__________ 3. Another term for land system. (ITOLPSEHREH)

__________ 4. An example of hydrosphere. (COAEN)

__________ 5. A planet that is essential in harboring life. (NLPAET)

8
What’s New

Instruction: Write the characteristics of lithosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, and

hydrosphere by writing your answer inside the table B.

Table A Table B
Four major subsystems of Earth Characteristics

1. Lithosphere

2. Atmosphere

3. Biosphere

4. Hydrosphere

9
What is It

What are the different events in the ecosystem in relation to the four earth

systems?

As mention earlier that different events happening in the ecosystem together

with the four subsystems. Events like earthquake, hurricane, and accidental oil

spills in the ocean from oil tanker ships or pollutants cause by the emissions

of vehicles that contribute to atmosphere. These different events can cause

changes to affect the spheres or what we call cause and effect result whether it is a

natural event (occurs naturally without act of human) or man-made event

(cause by human acts).

10
What’s More

Brainstorming

How important are the Earth`s Four Subsystems? To answer your group will

make a Radial Diagram to show the relationship of each idea that will make the

different subsystems important to all living things on Earth.

11
What I Have Learned

Direction: Make a Venn diagram to show the differences and commonalities

between Natural and Manmade events.

12
What I Can Do

Instruction: list down 5 manmade events and five natural events. Write
your answer in the table A. for Manmade events and B for natural events.

Table A Table B
Manmade events Natural events

13
