Chapter 1: Real number

Lecture 3

Let us Revise:

N = 1,2,3,…

W = 0,1,2,3,…

Z = …,-2,-1,0,1,2,…

Q = p/q , where p can be -ve,0,+ve and q can’t be zero.

Writing form of Q

1. Fraction

a. Proper Fraction 4/5

b. Improper Fraction 5/4

c. Mix Fraction 1¼

2. Decimal point

a. Terminating 0.125

b. Non-terminating but Recurring… 0.125´

N  W  Z  Q = Infinte Repeat

I = Infinite Non-repeating…

 Irrational number (I):

“ They are Non-Terminating(infinite) & Non-Recurring

Number(non-Repeating).”

√2 , √3 , π

Go and Search on Google

“ Value of √2 upto 10000 decimals”

“ Value of √3 upto 10000 decimals”

“ Value of π upto 10000 decimals”

Does they Repeat?

Real number(R) = rational number(Q) + Irrational number(I)

Euclid’s division algorithm

HCF (420,130)

HCF (196,38220)

HCF (35,119)

HCF (867, 255)

HCF (616, 32)

Exercise 1.1

225 = 135 * 1 + 90
135 = 90 * 1 + 45
90 = 45 * 2 + 0
HCF = 45

HCF of 616 & 32

616 = 32 * 19 + 8
32 = 8 *4 + 0
Neutral Number Prime Number Composite Number
1 2 4
3 6
5 8 = 2*2*2
7 9
11 10
13 12
17 14
15
Only 1 factor only 2 factors more than 2 factors
Now let’s understand what theorem says.
Take any composite number…
42 = 2*3*7
Now What are the other methods to find LCM & HCF.
LCM = Greatest power of all factors.
HCF = Least power of common factors. (5 times)

Let’s find LCM and HCF of 6 & 20

6 =2*3 = 21 * 31
20 = 2 * 2 * 5 = 22 * 51
LCM = 22 * 31 * 51 = 4*3*5 = 60
HCF = 21 = 2

Try again for 96 & 404.

96 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2* 2* 3 = 25 * 3 1
404 = 2 * 2 * 101 = 22 * 1011
LCM = 25 * 31 * 1011 = 32*3*101 = 9696
HCF = 22 = 4
Let’s try final one.
Find LCM & HCF for 6, 72 & 120

6=2*3 = 21 * 31
72 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 3 = 23 * 32
120 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 3 * 5 = 23 * 31 * 51
LCF = 23 * 32 * 51 = 8 * 9 * 5 = 360
HCF = 21 * 31 = 2*3 = 6

Exercise 1.2

(i) 140

140 = 22 * 5 * 7
(4) 5005 = 5 *7 * 11 * 13
Can you do rest of it?
Yes sir

26 = 2 *13
91 = 7 *13
LCM = 2 * 7 * 13 = 182
HCF = 13
LCM * HCF = 26 * 91
182 * 13 = 26 * 91
