dentify Highest Common Factors

The highest common factor is largest number that divides into two given number
Exactly leaving No remainder.

Find the highest common factor (HCF) of 12 and 16:

Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
The highest factor in both is 4
Hence the HCF of 12 and 16 is 4.
Factors of 16: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16

actorise Expressions
Worked example 1

d the HCF of 5y and 50

ctors of 5y are 1, 5, y

ctors of 50 are 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50

Factorise
ghest common factor is 5 this now goes outside the
ackets hence 5(…………….) 5y + 50
k your self ‘what do I multiply to 5 to give me
?’…..answer y hence 5(y……..)

k your self ‘what do I multiply to 5 to give me

?’….answer 10 hence 5(y + 10)

u can check the answer by expanding the brackets

nce 5(y+10) = 5y+50
Worked example 2

d the HCF of 14xy and 28x

ctors of 14xy are 1, 2, 7, 14, x, y

ctors of 28x are 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 28, x

Factorise
ghest common factor is 7x (this now goes outside the
ackets hence 7x(…………….) 14xy + 28x
k your self ‘what do I multiply to 7x to give me
xy?’…..answer 2y hence 7x(2y……..)

k your self ‘what do I multiply to 7x to give me

x?’….answer 4 hence 7x(2y + 4)

u can check the answer by expanding the brackets hence

(2y+4)=14xy+28x
Method of division
2
𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒6𝑡 − 3𝑡

HCF is 3t. First divide everything by the HCF)

 6𝑡 −3 𝑡 2
=(2 −𝑡 )
3𝑡

 3 𝑡 (2 − 𝑡 )

Always check your answer by expanding the brackets hence

Worked Examples

Highest common factor is 3

xample 1
6r + 15rd – 3r² 3r
actories 6r + 15rd – 3r²
Hence 3r(2+5d-r

Highest common factor is

xample 2
3d + 3
actorise 3d + 3
Hence 3(d+1
ave a go… remember to check your answer by expanding the brackets

2g+4 2(g+2

12-8t 4(3-2t

2k+5k² K(2+5k

6m³-9m² 3m²(m-3

16- 4b 4(4-b

12abcd – 120abc 12abc(d-10

3k+18 3(k+10)

3k+30 3(k-4)

3k-27 3(k+3)

3k+21 3(k-9)

3k+9 3(k+7)

3k-12 3(k+6)
Solve problems using expansion and factorising

an you explain why 8x +3y can not be factorised?

o common factors except for 1

ain factorised an expression correctly. His answer is 2(4y-x). What was the
xpression that he factorised?

– 2x

ex is trying to factorise 15z+30. Ruby thinks the answer is 3(5z+10) Zen thinks the
swer is 5(3z+6). They are both wrong. Why?

hey have not used the highest common factor. They should have got 15(z+2)
ind the missing length

? ?

Area = 3p²+4p p Area = 6+9n 3

Answer:3p+4 Answer:2+3n
