Bar charts

A bar chart or bar graph is a chart or graph that

presents categorical data with rectangular bars
with heights or lengths proportional to the values
that they represent. The bars can be plotted
vertically or horizontally. A vertical bar chart is
sometimes called a column chart.

The shop Sports StylezTM recorded their sales over a day.
A bar chart with the information is below.
Is each statement true or false?

Line charts
A line chart or line plot or line graph or curve chart is
a type of chart which displays information as a series
of data points called 'markers' connected by straight
line segments. It is a basic type of chart common in
many fields
A line graph shows changes over time. Line Graph

Pictogram
A pictogram, also called a pictograph, or simply picto,
and in computer usage an icon, is a graphic symbol
that conveys its meaning through its pictorial
resemblance to a physical object.
Mike recorded the goals scored by players on the school’s football teams.
Tim scored 4 goals, Dwayne scored 3 goals, Sandra scored 5 goals,
Bo scored 2 goals & Helen scored 3 goals.
Mike wants to show this data in the school newsletter.
How could we represent this data?
Mike recorded the goals scored by players on the school’s football teams.
Tim scored 4 goals, Dwayne scored 3 goals, Sandra scored 5 goals,
Bo scored 2 goals & Helen scored 3 goals.

Why might we want to represent data this way?
Mike makes a pictogram for the goals scored by
players on the Year 9 boys football team.
Tim scored 8 goals, Dwayne scored 12 goals,
Mark scored 4 goals & Jay scored 8 goals.

Conversion graphs
A conversion graph is used to change one unit into
another. This could be changing between miles and
kilometres, pounds to a foreign currency, or the cost
of a journey based on the number of miles travelled
Mary wanted to record how far she travelled with the petrol she
bought every time she filled up.

She bought 4 gallons & travelled 195 miles before

she had to fill up again.
What relationship do the points show?
250
More petrol = more distance
200 Miles per Gallon (MPG)

Distance
150
Travelled The car manufacturer says the
(Miles) car gets 50 MPG.
100
We can plot this
50 proportional relationship as a line.

Why are Mary’s points not exactly

0 on the line?
0 1 2 3 4 5
Petrol bought (gallons)
A conversion graph shows us the relationship between two variables.

We use conversion graphs to convert & estimate quantities.

250 How far should the car travel…

…with 3 gallons of petrol?

200 150 miles
…with 4.5 gallons of petrol?
Distance 225 miles
150
Travelled
(Miles) If someone drove 75 miles,
100 how much petrol would they use?
1.5 gallons
50
If someone drove 400 miles,
how much petrol would they use?
0 200 miles = 4 gallons
0 1 2 3 4 5
Petrol bought (gallons) 400 miles = 8 gallons
Time graphs
A distance-time graph shows how far an object has
travelled in a given time. It is a simple line graph that
denotes distance versus time findings on the graph.
Distance is plotted on the Y-axis. Time is plotted on
the X-axis.
What Are Time, Speed and Distance?
Time is…
Time is how long something takes to happen. This can also be called the duration
of an event or journey.

Speed is…
Speed is how fast or slow something travels.

Distance is…
Distance is how far something travels.

How are time, speed and distance linked?

If we know two of these factors, we can work out the third.

Distance-time graph

This is a distance-time
graph for a particle
moving along a straight
line.

It shows how the distance

of the particle, that
started at a fixed point,
changes with time

TIME is always on the Distance can only

horizontal axis be positive or zero
Distance-time graph

The graph is a straight

line.

This shows that equal

distances are covered in
equal amounts of time.
 It has a constant speed

Anything that grows by the same percentage every year, month,
day etc is growing exponentially. These graphs increase
rapidly and will never fall below the x-axis.
