Birthday celebrations

A birthday is a special day in everyone’s life, but do children in all countries celebrate it in the
same way?

A long time ago, only people like kings celebrated their birthdays. The people used to visit them to
offer them good wishes for the future and to give them presents. Later, children’s birthdays started
to be celebrated. I believe this first happened in Germany. It is also thought that birthday cakes
and candles originated there. The Happy Birthday song is not that old though which is odd, as it
was only written around one-hundred years ago by two sisters in the USA.

So, how do children celebrate their birthdays in different parts of the world? Let’s look at Brazil
first. In Brazil, the children eat vegetable or fruit-shaped candies, and the parents decorate the
house with coloured paper flowers. Now moving to the other side of the world. In Malaysia,
birthdays are celebrated by family, friends and neighbours and the people sing and play musical
instruments together. The children either receive a present or a small traditional red bag filled with
money. Next looking at India, the children always wear new clothes on their birthday and at
school they usually give some chocolates to all their classmates. After school, the family have a
meal together, and for dessert, the kids get a kind of rice pudding as a special treat. In Peru the
children receive two presents. The first is a goody bag and the second is a special pin. At the
birthday party, the children are all given special paper hats, but the birthday girl or boy is given a
hat in the shape of a crown. Lastly, in Norway children have to stand in front of the class with a
friend and do a dance while the rest of the class sing Happy Birthday.
