When I was a kid, I was afraid of water and my parents couldn’t get me in, no matter how hard
they tried. For some reason I just hated it. Both my father and mother were good swimmers, so
they couldn’t understand why I didn’t like swimming.

My parents even paid a friend to teach my sister and me to swim. I did agree to the lessons, but I
was a very slow learner. Whatever my sister was able to do in the water, it took me twice as long
to be able to do the same thing. But with perseverance, I eventually learned to swim. I never
managed to learn to dive though as I found it impossible.

However, when I was eight years old I started playing rugby at school and I really liked it. I was
surprised because I was very good at the sport and I played it all through my school years. I didn’t
really have any lessons as we just played the game with a coach. He did teach us the rules and a
few skills but the rest came naturally to me. I even enjoyed playing in winter when it was so cold
sometimes that you couldn’t even feel your fingers. I was in the school first team and we generally
won all our matches. I’d like to have seen my sister playing rugby. Knowing her, she’d have been
good at it too!

It just shows that if you fail at something, you should not give up everything but find something
that suits you better. We can’t be perfect at everything we do in life. Some people don’t like water
and some people don’t like very physical sports such as rugby.
