1. Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and

multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade-level
content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies:

1a. Use common Greek and Latin affixes and roots as clues to
the meaning of words (e.g., thermometer, thermos,
thermostat).

1b. Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries,

thesauruses), print or digital, to find the pronunciation and
clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.

Learning Objectives (HINT: Three or more learning objectives, make sure the objectives
are SMART: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely)

1. Students will be able to identify roots and affixes in

grade level vocabulary and use parts of a word to
determine the meaning.

2. Students will be able to utilize a dictionary to learn

pronunciation and definitions after exploring digital and
printed materials.

3. Students will be able to utilize a thesaurus to learn

how to synonyms after exploring digital and printed
materials.

General Introduction (HINT: Introduce your class, classroom, student, time period,
students' background, etc. How many instructional sessions? How

1
long is each session? How many students are you thinking of in this
class?)

My class is one of four fourth grade classes at a public

elementary school. I have 25-28 students total who are
with me the entire day. Our class time is divided up so
we spend 57 minutes working on English/Language Arts
at the same time each day.

2. Learning Path Overview

Learning Path Overview (Template for One Class Period)

ENGAGE - Grab (HINT: Design the activities to start the teaching, grab students'
Students’ Attention attention, and trigger students' learning interests. How might you
first motivate the student's interest in the lesson topic? What
activity will you use to engage students, how to make them
interested, how to make the connection to their prior knowledge, set
parameters, and raise questions? List out the activities, how to apply
them, your rationale, and how long it will take to teach. Be specific
and include all material links/references.)

To grab the students attention, I would write the

scientific word “Sarcops calvus melanonotus” on the
board and have my students guess what it is. I would
write their guesses on the board until we had quite a
few responses. After that, I would give them the
following information: calvus means bald, sarcops
means flesh and ops translates to face. With that
information, I would have them refine their guesses
and draw what they think it is. I would then have
them show their work and I suspect there would be a
lot of animals and humans drawn. I would then
show them a video of what it is (see Tweet in
resource link below) and have a conversation about
how we can break down words that we do not know
to learn clues about what it might be. (15- 20
minutes)
https://wakelet.com/wake/CrBSbx4MZltktE_geG_
k3

2
I would then show them a video introduction to Greek
and Latin roots. This video is informative and should be
engaging for them. (5 minutes)
Latin and Greek Root Words - Language Skills for…

EXPLORE - Students (HINT: Design the activities for students to learn or explore the
Explore the Content content. How will you help different students explore the key
concepts, discover new skills, and probe experiences in various
ways? What would you use to guide the students in exploring new
information? What would you use to make your topic presentation
interactive so that you are not lecturing students like a 'sage on a
stage'? List out the activities, how to apply them, your rationale, and
how long it will take to teach. Be specific and include all material
links/references.)

I will use Nearpod

D61C0453CB4E49DD1F26EB8-1) as an interactive
presentation for my students. Throughout the Nearpod
presentation, there is information slides to teach
students about root words and then there are fun
activities to allow students to test their understanding.
This is a fun and interactive way to make sure students
are engaged. (10 minutes)

EXPLAIN - Students (HINT: Design the activities for students to explain or showcase
Explain Their Learning what they have learned from the content exploration. How can
students explain their learning, new knowledge, observations, and
findings in various ways? Provide options to your students and the
necessary guidance (e.g., How to use a tool? How to submit their
explanation video/paper/artifacts?). List out the activities, how to
apply them, your rationale, and how long it will take to teach. Be
specific and include all material links/references.)

I would have students engage in making an infographic

on root words where they needed to include a video,
picture, explanation and examples of root words.
Students can be creative and make this assignment on
Canva. I would make sure a rubric is created and
embedded in the LMS where the assignment is posted.
(15- students will start and finish on day two). Example
on Canva:

3
https://app.nearpod.com/presentation?pin=58575AA88D
61C0453CB4E49DD1F26EB8-1

ELABORATE - Students (HINT: Link the lesson content to students’ real-life experiences.
Apply Their Learning Point out why this lesson is meaningful for the students. Let the
students apply their learning results in real-life contexts. How can
in Real World technology tools help students apply? What have they learned, and
did they create something new? Will they be able to share it with
others? How can students elaborate on their learning? List out the
activities, how to apply them, your rationale, and how long it will
take to teach. Be specific and include all material links/references. )

Students would be given a text to read and would need to

identify 5 root words and find the meaning of each root
word. This can be done on paper or on Google docs,
whatever the student prefers.

EVALUATE - Assess (HINT: Design rubrics to evaluate/assess your students' learning. If

Students’ Learning the students meet the learning objectives, you set earlier after this
lesson. How will you evaluate your students’
activities/presentations/artifacts? Considering the summative
assessment, formative assessment, and multiple options for various
students.)

I would have students engage in a Kahoot

-suffixes/fd7d4b57-3ee5-4506-820f-911373aa0e94) that
is a fun game that also serves as a formative assessment.
I could use this to gauge my students' understanding and
see if we need to revisit any topics or if they are getting
the hang of it. Since Kahoot is not the best way to gauge
individual students' learning, I would also have them
complete a summative assessment that can be found
here:. This will allow me to see where each student is in

the learning process. (25 minutes)

Learning Path Overview (Template for Multiple Class Periods)

Day 1 (HINT: Describe all activities you plan to do during class. You can
follow the 5 E’s model above for each day’s instruction. You can
also design the most suitable instructional path for your content. )

Day 2: Students will continue to work on their

infographic poster and submit it to the class LMS when
finished. (57 minutes)

Day 3 (HINT: Describe all activities you plan to do during class. You can
follow the 5 E’s model above for each day’s instruction. You can
also design the most suitable instructional path for your content. )

Students will learn about using a dictionary and

thesaurus today. I will start with a discussion and we
will create a KWL chart as a class. I will have it up on the
board and type in the columns as students throw out
information. I will use this site for the chart:

I will then assign each student a dictionary and

thesaurus and allow them explore the pages of both.
Students will then explore an online dictionary and
thesaurus. (10 mins)

We will then watch videos introducing dictionaries and

thesaurus before we search for our own words.

Next, students will be asked to find a new word and

gather all the information on the entry and post it to the
Padlet. See instructions on the Padlet:

Students will now make up their own words for fun and
we will create a class dictionary. See instructions and
example below: (25 mins)

3. Lesson Plan Reflection
Part I: Reflect on your decision-making process about using the technology tools
in your lesson plan.

● First, select five technology tools you used in the lesson plan project, and fill in the
names in the left column below.
● Second, briefly describe the technology tool you use in each row.
● Third, answer the questions to help frame your answer.

Technology Using Decision Making Reflection

Technology Tool Concept Map - Mural

Example https://app.mural.co/t/psy5054271/m/psy5054271/16

7
I explored three concept map tools: bubble.us, popplet,
and mural. I think the Mural fits my project the most
because the mural does not limit how many bubbles are
in each concept map. Moreover, the interface and user
design were clear and easy to use.

The instructional goal of using this tool is to develop a

general overview image of the research methods.

I am using the concept map with my students to build

their understanding of research methods. The students
will keep enriching the bubbles and adding to the notes
along with their weekly reading. Therefore, unlimited
bubbles and easier to use are the key points for
selecting the tools.

My students will read the textbook weekly, and they will

be required to add bubbles to their own concept map
after reading. We will share the new bubbles in the class
discussion and compare the similarities and differences
of their concept map.

Using the concept map with graduate students is

beneficial for their learning because the knowledge of
research methods is well-structured but a huge
amount. It is hard for students to complete all
information in a short time. Making the concept map
can help the student review the former reading, develop
the relations among various research methods, and gain
a general view of research methods. In addition, the
students can develop the concept map by using terms
and short phrases with references, so they can address
the original page and sources if needed.

Technology Tools #1 Describe the tool and insert the link to your artifacts.
Wakelet Wakelet is a site that allows you to compile a list of digital
resources so they are all in one place and easy to access. It
is a great place to store multiple resources for a lesson
plan. Link:
https://wakelet.com/wake/CrBSbx4MZltktE_geG_k3

8
The instructor provided multiple options for each
performance task; what is your rationale for selecting
this one?
I had never heard of Wakelet before so I wanted to pick a
resource that was new to me so I have multiple options to
use in the future.

What is/are the instructional goal(s) of using this tool in

your lesson plan?
My goal is to be able to keep mh material and content
organized and allow it to be easily accessible by my
students. Having material in one place ensures students
will not miss any content that is provided to them.

Why do you think the technology tool you picked will help
achieve your instructional goal(s)?
This tool is very easy to use and achieves my
instructional goal of being organized and keeping
material together.

Please describe the instructional activity you designed

using this technology tool.
I used this tool to collect and gather resources that I plan
to use for my lesson plan. There are videos, images,
Tweets, and worksheets compiled together that all
support the Idaho State Standard for Word Building.

Why do you think your design will help students learn?

Yes, this site will provide students with the opportunity to
easily access material that is needed for them to learn a
concept or standard.

Technology Tools #2 Describe the tool and insert the link to your artifacts.
NearPod is a tool that allows you to create interactive
Nearpod presentations. You can build slides that contain
information on a topic and implement activities
throughout. Link:

https://app.nearpod.com/presentation?pin=58575AA88D
61C0453CB4E49DD1F26EB8-1

The instructor provided multiple options for each

performance task; what is your rationale for selecting
this one?
I had heard of NearPod before but had never used it so I
decided to give it a try.

What is/are the instructional goal(s) of using this tool in

your lesson plan?
My instructional goal for using this tool is to present a
new concept but present it in a way beyond lecturing.
Standing in front of the class can be exceptionally boring
for children, especially for those at a young age.

Why do you think the technology tool you picked will help
achieve your instructional goal(s)?
This tool will help attain my educational goal by
providing students with activities for them to participate
in. This will make students want to learn the information
so they can engage in the activity.

Please describe the instructional activity you designed

using this technology tool.
The NearPod I created talks about root words, prefixes
and suffixes. I start off by providing students with an
introduction to what these concepts are and provide
examples. Once students get a grasp of the content, I then
added some activities for students to practice their
knowledge.

Why do you think your design will help students learn?

I believe my design will help students learn because this
NearPod is designed to be fun and engaging.

Technology Tools #3 Describe the tool and insert the link to your artifacts.
I used Canva which allows users to create fliers, posters,
Canva infographics, newsletters, etc. Link:

ource=sharebutton

The instructor provided multiple options for each

performance task; what is your rationale for selecting
this one?
Canva seemed the most interesting and easy to use. I
liked the fact that you could choose from a blank slate or
you could pick from a template and edit the information.

What is/are the instructional goal(s) of using this tool in

your lesson plan?
My instructional goal for this tool would be for students
to display their knowledge in an infographic.

Why do you think the technology tool you picked will help
achieve your instructional goal(s)?
This tool is easy to use and allows students to express
their creativity. It will show me what they know and I can
ensure they have met the standard.

Please describe the instructional activity you designed

using this technology tool.
Students were asked to create an infographic showing
their knowledge on root words, prefixes and suffixes.
They are to include a video, pictures, information and
examples to their infographic.

Why do you think your design will help students learn?

This design will allow students to show their knowledge
and use their creativity skills.

Technology Tools #4 Describe the tool and insert the link to your artifacts.
Canvas Instructure is a LMS that allows you to build your
Learning Management course and add students to it. You can post assignments
System and quizzes in Canvas as well as make announcements.
Link: https://www.instructure.com/canvas

11
The instructor provided multiple options for each
performance task; what is your rationale for selecting
this one?
I have always used Canvas as a student but I have never
been behind the scenes in teacher view. I wanted to
explore the other side and figure out how a course is built.

What is/are the instructional goal(s) of using this tool in

your lesson plan?
My goal for this tool is to provide students with a place to
view their assignments, rubrics and due dates. It allows
them to stay on top of their work and stay organized.
They can also submit their work to Canvas where I can
provide them with a grade and feedback.

Why do you think the technology tool you picked will help
achieve your instructional goal(s)?
I think this tool is simple to use and easily allows me to
manage my classroom in an organized manner.

Please describe the instructional activity you designed

using this technology tool.
I used Canvas to make a fake class and posted an
assignment, rubric, and announcement. I also included
some information about our class as well as an
introduction for them to get to know me. With my lesson
plan, students were directed to submit their Canva poster
to Canvas where I will grade it.

Why do you think your design will help students learn?

LMS will help my students learn by providing them with
course information from the class all in one place.

Technology Tools #5 Describe the tool and insert the link to your artifacts.
This tool allows me to create a fun and engaging game for
Kahoot students to test their knowledge. Link:
https://create.kahoot.it/share/root-words-prefixes-and-
suffixes/fd7d4b57-3ee5-4506-820f-911373aa0e94

12
The instructor provided multiple options for each
performance task; what is your rationale for selecting
this one?
Once again, I have used Kahoot before but I have always
been a student playing and we have always used Kahoots
that were created by others. I wanted to make my own to
see how the process went and how easy/difficult it would
be.

What is/are the instructional goal(s) of using this tool in

your lesson plan?
The goal is to provide students with a fun, competitive
way to test their knowledge while they answer different
types of questions.

Why do you think the technology tool you picked will help
achieve your instructional goal(s)?
Yes, as a teacher this can be a fun way for you to see how
many of your students are understanding the content.
You may find most students are getting it or you may
want to go back and revisit some concepts.

Please describe the instructional activity you designed

using this technology tool.
I made a Kahoot that had questions about root words,
prefixes and suffixes. A lot of the questions were from the
NearPod lesson that I had created earlier.

Why do you think your design will help students learn?

It will help students reinforce what they already have
learned. It will also be beneficial to stop after each
questions and go over the answers and explain to
students why it is correct just so everyone is on the same
page.

Part II: Reflect on what you have learned in this course. Be sure to answer the
following questions:

13
● First, highlight one technology tool that impresses you the most from this course,
then explain why.

One technology tool that impressed me from this course was NearPod. This was my
first time using NearPod so I was not exactly sure what it was all about or how to use
it. It was very simple to use and I was impressed with all the features it offered that
encourage interactive collaboration with students. Teaching students a new topic,
especially younger students, can be very difficult sometimes if you are lecturing the
whole time. Students will not be engaged and will lose interest in the material. With
NearPod, I was able to incorporate interactive fun tasks that will allow students to
stay engaged and have fun while learning. I think activities like this will help reach
desired learning outcomes.

● Second, highlight one technology tool that impresses you the least from this course,
then explain why.

One technology tool that did not impress me much was the rubric tool. I thought it
was easy to use, however, I think it is pointless if I were to use a LMS like Canvas. In
Canvas, you can easily create a rubric with the assignment you post so they are
together in the same spot. Students can easily access the rubric along with the
assignment directions all in the same place. However, if the assignment is not in a
LMS then a rubric tool like this could be helpful.

● Third, answer the following questions:

1. How did you feel about technology integration at the beginning of the course?
Did your feelings change at the end of the course? How? Why?

At the beginning of this course, I was a little bit nervous because I was not very
familiar with technological integration. Looking over the course beforehand, I thought
I was going to struggle because many of the resources we used I was not familiar with.
I also had never created a website so I figured it would be pretty challenging for me. I
was surprised to learn how easy most of these resources were and how
straightforward creating the website was. I am glad I have been introduced to these
tools and I am now confident I can successfully use them in my classroom one day.
Overall, I feel much better about technology integration and hope to continue learning
about tools I can use with my students.

14
2. What did you learn about technology integration? Provide examples and
specifically explain why you think these are important for you.

I learned that technology integration is very important to integrate in classrooms to

allow students to connect to the material on a deeper level. Before I thought about
technology in the classroom is simply giving students a laptop and allowing them to
search the web, but technology integration goes much more beyond that. There are so
many resources that I can use as a teacher to enhance their learning as well as
resources for them to use to create content, show their understanding and increase
their digital competency. Teaching technology skills will help children succeed
throughout their educational journey as well as their life afterwards.

3. What would you do differently for the lesson plan? Use your own lesson plan as
an example, and explain it in detail. How would you change your process for
creating a lesson?

As this lesson plan was built for a technology course, I think next time I will try to find
more teaching resources and activities that are not on the computer. I think it is
important for students to not only use technology to learn but also books. Next time, I
will change my process to incorporate more reading material and assignments
especially since my lesson plan is built around using dictionaries and knowing how to
identify root words. Another change I would make is shifting around the template of
the lesson plan. I realized that some sections take longer than others and it was
difficult for me to go through all 5 E’s in one day. I think this is a lot of content and
activities for students to soak in during one class period. I understand I can break up
the plan in multiple days, however I would like to break up the sections of each day
into multiple days.

4. What would you do differently for the teacher website? Use your own teacher
website, and explain it in detail. How would you change your process for
creating a website?

Overall, I am satisfied with my teacher website and how it turned out but I think I
would have changed it a little bit to make it more visually appealing. It was difficult
for me to format some of the pages but I think that is because this is my very first time
doing something like this. Over time I am sure I will develop more skills to create a
better website. I would also like to maybe incorporate some other work from other
classes so it is not all focused on this one course.

15
5. How will you use what you have learned from this course in your future
classroom?

I will definitely use what I learned in the class in my future classroom. I believe with
almost every concept that I teach, I can apply at least one of these educational
technologies to better teach the lesson. I also would like to create a newsletter or use
my website to make a blog in order to communicate with parents and keep them up to
date with what is going on in the class.

6. What technologies/tools that you used in your assignment were not provided
in the class? (If there is any, optional.)

In addition to the tools provided in class, I used Online VIsual Paradigm to create a
KWL chart.
