Goonyella
Rail Corridor
The Goonyella Coal Rail System is one of four systems in Aurizon’s Central Queensland
Coal Network (CQCN).
The Goonyella system is an
electrified train system located in
central Queensland, which services
the Bowen Basin coal region.
The corridor connects to export
terminals at Hay Point and
Dalrymple Bay in Mackay and
Abbot Point in Bowen. Aurizon hauls
coal in Goonyella for many of the
world’s largest coal miners including
BMA, Glencore and Peabody.
In 2012 Aurizon commissioned a
$1.1 billion rail link connecting
Goonyella to the Newlands Coal
Rail System. The rail upgrade
significantly improved supply chain
capacity by providing Goonyella
customers with additional flexibility
to export their coal through the
Port of Abbot Point, along with
the existing ports in Mackay.

Aurizon has multiple crewing
points designed to meet the
operational challenges presented
by Goonyella’s long hauls (up to
300 kilometres) and to underpin
supply chain velocity. The Jilalan rail
yard, situated 35 kilometres west of
the Port of Hay Point, has modern
locomotive and wagon maintenance
depots where Aurizon’s fleet of
specially designed heavy haul
locomotives are serviced.
