Safety :

• Safety is the state of being "safe"

• Condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss

• To protect against failure, breakage, or accident

Safety :

• Absence of Danger

• There is no arbitrary state of

‘Absolute safety’ and there is
always a chance of something
going wrong – A risk , however
small that chance may be.

Construction and Safety :

• The construction industry contributes a great deal to improving

our quality of life. However, for many workers and their families
and friends, involvement in the construction industry leads to the
unimaginable pain and suffering associated with an accidental
death or serious injury.

Health and Safety in Construction:
• Nature of Construction Industry
• Fragmented
• 3 D (Difficult , Dirty, Dangerous)

Health and Safety at Construction Projects:

▪ Unfortunately, construction is a hazardous business.

▪ Despite active safety programs on the part of contractors, owners and
many legal regulations, accident experience continues to place the
construction industry among the most accident prone of all types of
work.

Health and Safety at Construction Projects:
▪ Hazards
▪ A hazard is a situation that poses a level of
potential threat or risk, to life, health, property,
or environment.

▪ More directly, a hazard is a source of potential

harm or negative outcome from past, current, or
future exposures.

▪ Most hazards are dormant or potential, with

only a theoretical risk of harm; however,
once a hazard becomes "active," it can create
an emergency situation.
