Lesson I Learning Activity

Instruction:

Make research and look for the different organizations that operate using a volunteerism

platform. Study the operation and note of their processes on how the organization ran. Make a

summary brief as to how they execute some of their programs.

In the Philippines there are non-profit organizations that operate using a volunteerism

platform, this paper will feature 5 (five) organizations that are mostly located in Luzon and

looking for participants across the country to volunteer themselves and render service.

According to A. Stukas (2014) in his study entitled ‘Volunteerism and community

involvement: Antecedents, experiences, and consequences for the person and the situation’,

volunteerism is a form of prosocial behavior that involves a freely chosen decision to commit a

sustained amount of time and effort to help another person, group, or cause, typically through a

nonprofit organization. The United Nation Volunteer specify the aim of volunteerism which are

helping to eradicate poverty and enhance basic health and education, address environmental

challenges, minimize disaster risk, or prevent social isolation and violent conflict. As of 2017,

there are over 970 million volunteers all over the world (UNV,2017).

The Philippine welfare Society or also known as PAWS is established in 1954 and is a

non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and promotion of humane treatment of all
animals. They also run the PARC animal shelter (PAWS Animal Rehabilitation Center). It is

currently home to around 300 cats and dogs that have been rescued from cruelty or neglect.

These animals are rehabilitated in the hopes of finding them new homes and a second chance at a

decent life. It is a volunteer-based organization. They advocate animal welfare laws and deliver

programs that are not only beneficial to an animal but also the volunteers because their empathy

and fondness for animals are entailed to them through participating in the PAWS program.

Rehoming assistance of pets is one of the programs of PAWS. PAWS takes in pets or animals

from an owner who would like to bestow their responsibility due to various reasons that can be

emotional or financially related. The initial phase of the framework of this program is the

assessment of the pet owners if they tried all other options and their last resort is rehoming their

pets, and then they will also assess the pet if it is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, healthy, and not

aggressive. After the assessment, they will put the pet in the shelter and take care of it. PAWS

asserts that they are not a pet adoption center but an animal welfare organization which means

that the pets that are under their care will be rehabilitated and advertise for adoption. One of the

most important programs of PAWS is the rescue and rehabilitation operation program of pets

which are victims of negligence and cruelty, the initiation of this program is stated in the rescue

phase wherein the volunteers or PAWS officers received messages or calls from a concerned

citizen about a wounded dog or a cat trapped someplace and they will go to the said location.

The rescue operation is done with trained individuals who will have close contact with the

animal, they are required to execute proper handling of the animals, provision of first aid, and

managing their behavioral problems. Then the rehabilitation phase will follow wherein the

animals are kept in the PAWS animal rehabilitation center. The rescued animals will undergo

physical rehabilitation through treatment of their existing wounds or infection and adequate
supply of nutrition through catering food to them. They will also go through behavioral

rehabilitation which is accomplished through the provision of a stress-free environment, training,

and establishment of friendly relationships with the animals.

The Agape Selfless Unconditional Love Inc is a non-governmental organization whose

mission is to reach out to abandoned and marginalized children in various shelters throughout the

Philippines. They organize outreach activities and fund-raising events to help them with their

educational and daily needs. They are devoted to doing outreach programs centered on

education, health, and providing necessities to the children. This organization is volunteer-based

therefore volunteers from all ages and professions partake in the activities and agenda of this

organization primarily in the outreach programs. The outreach programs come in various forms

like conducting teaching sessions that are fun and interactive which includes activities like

storytelling, dancing, eating, and playing games that are good for the emotional and social health

of the children. Meal for you and I is a feeding program that is mostly done in public schools and

communities this event is giving free but nutritious foods to children.

Reach Out and Feed Philippines Inc. is a non-profit organization with the purpose of

feeding and nourishing Filipino children of all religions, ethnicities, and genders. They

accomplish this through a nationwide network of community, church, and public school partners.

The children who do not have access to nutritious foods are the ones who are their priority

beneficiaries. The first action they do is receiving donations from sponsors and they will divide

the budget into three 60% for school-based feeding program and Nourishment program, 23% for

operations, and 17% for street kids and community feeding and outreach. The volunteers and

health care workers will prepare the meal ingredients which are from the local farmers and

markets to also help in giving them income, they will design a meal from the ingredients bought
that are fit to the nutrients requirement of malnourished kids, to be followed by the preparation

of supplements and food utensils. Then they will conduct the feeding program to school-based

feeding centers and it is not a one-time event because there will be a monthly check-up to

monitor the health status of the children, monthly meeting with the teacher regarding the

academic performance of the children, and monthly forums and meeting with the parents.

The Go Bike Project is a youth-led, non-profit, non-partisan organization that teaches and

qualifies youth to be community responders during health emergencies and natural disasters.

Their goal is to save lives one ride at a time. In 2019, Go Biker Project founder Edren Llanillo

establish a program called "Ronda Kalusugan". It started during the prevailing covid-19

situation, and instead of slowing down their course of action, they use the pandemic as

motivation to help people especially the old citizens in managing their health. This program is

participated by trained volunteers who are knowledgeable about riding a bike and grant first aid

before going to the actual field. Once they are qualified they will be given mountain bikes, first

aid kits, and medicines to help in urgent health emergencies like road crash accidents. They will

roam around the town every day to check the scene if there are elderly people who want their

blood pressure and sugar level to be measured.

Lastly, the Mentalhealth Ph is a non-profit organization that aims to reach out and voice

out for individuals who struggle with their mental health. They have online campaigns where the

online platforms are utilized to reach out to the people who have problems with their mental

health. On-ground campaigns are seminars and workshops executed within a community,

generally, this campaign is about suicide prevention, information solicitation, and promoting the

importance of mental health in youth. On-ward campaigns are intended for partners and sponsors
where formal meetings are held to discuss important manners like planning, the progress of the

other campaigns, and sourcing of budget to be allotted to the programs.

Lesson 2 Learning Activity

Instruction:

In your own campus, how do you evaluate your performance in terms of your

participation to co-curricular activities? Do you find these activities of your Special Modules

LTS/CWTS – Volunteerism Module II organization productive and engaging? Why do you say

so? What do you think are the learning that you get from joining such groups?

With all honesty, my main reason for participating in co-curricular activities revolves

around my level of anticipation. If I am not fond of the agenda of activity I will not be going to

sign up. I am usually a member of science-related school organizations that do planting activities

and clean-up drives. The most recent club where I am involved is the library club where I

experienced pasting a borrower’s card in a paper pouch at the end page of the book. I

participated in this club due to the sole reason of managing and taking care of the books that are

supplicating and imparting knowledge to students like me especially in the course of doing an

assignment or even for entertainment because there are magazines and fictional books available

in the library. I evaluate my performance in my participation in these co-curricular activities

through self-assessment if I am doing my responsibilities and duties in that club and if I am

consistently present during forums. I also evaluate through inner meditation, I see to it that my

motivation in being a trusted and reliable member is my passion on what I get myself into and if

I am happy with what I am doing.

I find the activities of Special Modules LTS/CWTS – Volunteerism Module II

organization as productive and engaging because the activities have a systemic approach wherein

there is specific time allotment and the activities are doable. In terms of engagement, I can say
that after reading and researching for activity 1 in lesson 1 I have an enlightenment that as a part

of community I am considered as an advocate and I can use my talent and time to help people.

Basically, I have awakening of what I am missing in my life, that I have to maturely be insightful

and knowledgeable about issues present in my community and have a sense of volunteerism to

make our community a better place for children and elders.

From joining to such groups I learned the essentiality of cooperation, unity, charity, and

most importantly I recognize my responsibility as a citizen and my capability to be a part of a

radical movement. Furthermore, I believe I became a lot closer to being humane by

volunteerism, and participation in such clubs provides opportunities that build my camaraderie

and compassion for the environment and to people.
