TEAM SPORTS-BASEBALL/SOFTBALL

I. What I Need to Know
Team Sport – These sports do not only develop the physical qualities of an
individual but also the social, emotional qualities. Team sport requires discipline,
dedication, and time .
Team Sports keep children fit. They provide a platform of life lessons
and skills that are essential to social and developmental health. It is the ability to
work together towards part of the team sports, as well as an important life skill. A
team sport includes any sport which involves players working together towards a
shared objective. A team sport is an activity in which a group of individuals, on the
same team, work together to accomplish an ultimate goal which is usually to win.
This can be done in a number of ways such as outscoring the opposing team. Team
members set goals, make decisions, communicate, manage conflict, and solve
problems in a supportive, trusting atmosphere in order to accomplish their objectives.
Some team sports are practiced between opposing teams, where the players interact
directly and simultaneously between them to achieve an objective. The objective
generally involves teammates facilitating the movement of a ball or similar item in
accordance with a set of rules, in order to score points. This usually involves careful
strategic planning, good preparation, and a mental and physical toughness of each
individual that is part of the team. Team sports rely on all of the players working
together equally in order to succeed at the task at hand. Being part of a team sport
requires that each athlete has patience and perseverance since the goals put forth to
accomplish might take some time to meet. This involves a good deal of dedication,
hard work, and good leadership over that span of time.
Participations in team sports allow kids to make lasting friendships,

A. What’s in?
I – Baseball/ Softball Basics.
Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two opposing teams
who take turns batting and fielding. The game proceeds when a player on the
fielding team, called the pitcher, throws a ball which a player on the batting team
tries to hit with a bat. The objective of the offensive team (batting team) is to hit the
ball into the field of play, allowing its players to run the bases, having them advance
counter-clockwise around four bases to score what are called "runs". The objective
of the defensive team (fielding team) is to prevent batters from becoming runners,
and to prevent runners' advance around the bases. A run is scored when a runner
legally advances around the bases in order and touches home plate (the place
where the player started as a batter). The team that scores the most runs by the end
of the game is the winner.
The first objective of the batting team is to have a player reach first base
safely. A player on the batting team who reaches first base without being called "out"
can attempt to advance to subsequent bases as a runner, either immediately or
during teammates' turns batting. The fielding team tries to prevent runs by getting
batters or runners "out", which forces them out of the field of play. Both the pitcher
and fielders have methods of getting the batting team's players out. The opposing
teams switch back and forth between batting and fielding; the batting team's turn to
bat is over once the fielding team records three outs. One turn batting for each team
constitutes an inning. A game is usually composed of nine innings, and the team with
the greater number of runs at the end of the game wins. If scores are tied at the end
of nine innings, extra innings are usually played. Baseball has no game clock,
although most games end in the ninth inning.
These basic skills to be learned:
● Throwing
- Propel the ball with force through the air by a movement of the arm and
hand.
● Pitching
- In baseball, a pitch is the act of throwing a baseball toward home plate to
start a play.
● Catching
5
- In baseball, a catch occurs when a fielder gains secure possession of a
batted ball in flight, and maintains possession until he voluntarily or
intentionally releases the ball. The fielder must catch the ball with his hand
or glove.
● Batting
- In baseball, batting is the act of facing the opposing pitcher and trying to
produce offense for one's team. A batter or hitter is a person whose turn it
is to face the pitcher.
● Running/ Base Running
- In baseball, base running is the act of running from base to base,
performed by members of the team at bat.
