Academic Writing and Its Audience
Academic writing is often composed for specific audiences, most of whom belong to the same or related
field as the author. Readers of academic writing include scholars, teachers, and other subject matter
experts.

Expository Writing and Argumentative Writing

In expository writing, the writer aims to make his or her readers informed.
In argumentative writing, the writer aims to persuade readers.

Considerations in Academic Writing

1) The content determines the value of an academic piece. It should be accurate, and each major point
should be supported by evidence.
2) The basic format of academic writing is composed of an introduction, body, and conclusion. Some
academic writings, though, require a more specific or detailed format.
3) The language and style of academic writing should be clear, precise, and coherent.
4) Citations are important in academic writing.

Professional Writing and Its Purpose

Professional writing is writing in the workplace. It is a discourse wherein one communicates to enable and
support a business or workplace context.

Professional writing may have the following purposes: to inform or share information with its audience and
persuade or build goodwill with the audience.

Considerations in Professional Writing

1) The purpose of writing in any profession should be clear.
2) The audience should always be considered. The document should be tailored to the need of the
target audience.
