Composing Professional Correspondence: Application for Employment

Application for Employment

- Employment application means the letter written for getting a job. The job or
employment application is the official form that employers ask all applicants for a
position to fill out. It is the primary means of introducing the job seeker with the
employer. Getting a job is a long way process. This process starts with writing job
application by the job seekers and ends with final selection of the candidate by the
employer.
- Most jobs require a cover letter, a resume, a description of future research plans and/ or
teaching philosophy, and a list of references.

 Write your Cover Letters

- Make sure that your cover letter offers a brief introduction to yourself, and, if you are
applying for an academic job, include your teaching and research experience.
Alternatively, if you’re applying for a job beyond the professoriate, you will introduce
yourself and include your most salient qualifications.
- Remember, you do not need to write extensively about every qualification – you simply
need to convince the reader that you are qualified for the job and that you have the
potential to be an interesting and supportive colleague.

 Update your Resume

- Coupled with your cover letter, resume shows your experience and your qualifications.
Keep a master list of all your work experience, publications, and other information that
may be relevant for applying to jobs. The most important element on a resume is work
experience.

 Request Letters of Recommendation

- Academic jobs usually require three letters of recommendation with your application,
although some academic jobs simply ask for a list reference.
- If the reference is hesitant to write you a letter, be sensitive to the situation.
